Allison 6sp: Shift shaft change

Can the shift shaft on a 6spd allison be changed with the tranny installed in the vehicle? The shaft has a pretty good nick in it (I dont have any idea how it happened) and ive tried changing the seal to no avail, just wont seal right.

Pretty easily actually. Drop the valve body and pull the pin out that holds the shaft in. Slide it out through the IMS, and slide the new one in.
