I have a 03 duramax. I am getting shift range inhibited. It feels like. The transmission is slipping in forward. Reverse works fine. Does it sound like the transmission is bad.

I'll have to check them. I just bought the truck. I noticed the sensor on the bell housing was not connected thought that might have been the problem

does it do it only when warm? dealing with one of those right now...changed the PSM and it isn't coding or giving RSI anymore, but still delays engagement to Drive when warm. other than that, the trans shifts perfect under all conditions and I ohm'ed the speed sensors out and logged them with a tech 2 and all is well there. Codes have been 1711 and 1721 before the PSM change. Conditions during code setting were warm fluid temps (above 175 degrees) verified hot operation mode was not active via tech 2, and shift selection from P, R, or N to any forward gear.

It does it cold. Does yours slip in first and not shift out of first

nope, this one does it Warm only. engages perfectly when cold. shifts flawlessly warm and cold, it's an 01 that we built a bit over a year ago that suddenly exhibited this issue beginning a month ago when warm maneuvering in a parking lot. Like I said too, although the delayed engagement is still noticeable with the new PSM, it has not coded again for me since cleaning the VB and changing filters, fluid, etc. I reset taps for 1-2 upshifts as well. I really hope it's just a funky solenoid. Either E or C.

Range shift inhibited is a general message that displays when a selected range cannot engage within the allowed amount of time. It can be from a multitude of conditions. so you reconnected the speed sensor and cleared the codes and it still wont shift out of first?

OK for codes I got paid and p0731. 731 is gear 1 ratio incorrect. It slipped bad in gear 1 shifted to second and felt good. I assume the clutches I gear 1 are shot. Does anytime think so too

1st gear is C5 clutches and c1 clutches. Both are next to impossible to destroy at stock power level

However, there can be a mechanical issue still, I just don't think it'll be the clutches.

Fill out a signature so we know more info on your truck.
As afar as P0731; plugged filter, speed sensor, low voltage to the trans, transfercase, and bad C1 clutches.

C5s are on in reverse which he said is fine, and C1s are on in second which he also said is fine. I know you know this, I just thought it sounded a little strange.
