So I was driving around yesterday an hit some unexpected rough roads when I was traveling a little faster than I should have. The roads were pretty torn up and the truck bounced around a lot.

Now I have the message service 4wd on the DIC

Symptoms:
- no cel
-4x4 switch doesn't light up at all
-service 4wd message
-truck drives fine with no clunks or hard shifts or anything
-truck is stuck in 2wd

What I have tried:
-Checked for loose connections (none I can see)
-swapped switch for a known working one (no luck)
-transmission re learn thru my insight cts( nothing)
- checked 15a fuse for 4wd (not sure if theirs other to look at?)

I'm stuck as to what to do next. My transfer case was flushed and serviced 8 months 5000 miles ago. Any idea where to look next?

In the last week I installed tie rod sleeves, edge insight, hd sway bar end links could any of these be the culprit?

have you looked underneath the truck at the harness to see if any of the wiring on connectors was damaged?

Disconnect all the connectors to the transfer case and then plug them back in. A connection could have been lost and just looking to see if they are loose doesn't always work.

If you get lucky and find a dealer tech that knows how to use one.

Haha if that isn't the truth. I have a buddy who was a mechanic at a dealership for a couple years and knows what he is doing so he can probably go with me and help me out.

Me and my buddy ran into the same problem yesterday but in his 1500. We turned the truck off and pulled the 4wd fuse I believe it was and then reinstalled it and turned back on the truck and it was gone and good to go!

Good luck I think it may be my actuator. Ping to have to find a tech2 and see for sure because none of the other tricks are solving my issue.

I checked the plug to the t case and the fuses and it still says service the 4wd. Checked the fuses too. I'm still able to put it in 4wd with no problems it just says to service it.

That's funny! I work in the oil patch in Alberta. Rough roads are standard out here. Trucks are in 4wd from the edge of the highway & back again. Plus I shift mine into Neutral to flat tow it behind the Motorhome regularly. Probably shift transfer case 60 times a month. No issues ever, since 2005. I wonder if you use your T-case very little if it will act up?

It gets its fair share of use between winter driving and 4x4 launches.

I saw service 4wd when I had my abs sensors unplugged and started my truck. Could be a bad hub bearing that carries the abs sensor. As far as the indicator light not lighting up for the 4wd button, that kinda points to the actuator. If it don't know where the actuator is at in its stroke then you won't have a light. If it were me, I would jack up the front and grab the top and bottom of the front wheel and see if you can move it in and out. Check each side. If there is movement then it's time to replace the bearing assembly. You may get lucky and by just trying to go from 2wd to 4wd hi then 4wd lo then back to 4wd hi then 2wd it may unstick the actuator. Try it a couple times. Good luck.

Yeah I just put tie rod sleeves on two weeks ago or so and there was no play in the wheels. I Also tried putting the truck in 4 wheel drive a lot hoping the button would still work. I think it's the actuator as well but I want to get the codes read so I don't throw parts at it.

Hopefully the dealer doesn't rape me to read a code. Although I expect they will.

Sooo the problem just went away?!? I was going to bringit to the dealer and when I started it up to go everything was back to normal. I've put a hundred miles or so on it now and everything is working fine. Should I still go have the codes read or just not worry about it?

take it in and see what they say. just cause they find something does not mean they have to fix it.

I think I'm going to hold off on bringing it to the dealer. Everything is working fine so I will leave it be for now. Hopefully it doesn't come back.
