Allison 5sp: SC4 Harsh shifts.

This is my wifes truck a 04.5lly.

Some history on the trans, The trans i bought used allready put together and in working order from Adam (Turbobeaglebuggy). I did switch to a ats 5star converter only because i felt i damaged the 1057 during install adn i didnt want to risk junking the trans if i did f up the converter!

Anyhow mostly the 3/4 shift is the worst but the 4/5 is kinda rough also. during 1/2 throttle and above it will launch stuff out of the cubby holes duing a shift and even chirp the tires on occasion. 1/2 to 3/4 throttle is the worst, full throttle actually smooths it out a bit. You can feel the whole truck shudder when it like this as well, to me its almost like its shifting with the converter locked. Ive tried different tuning methods (engine only) to make it shift better with no luck. IMO these shifts are far harder then should be. So i guess my question is, is it normal for them to shift this rough or is something haywire and gonna start breaking hard parts.

Try resetting the TAP that is acting up. Do not rest them all. You may have to do it a few times.

Thanx Mike I'll give that a try. I usually reset them all after i do a reflash and thats all!

I leave all the shift defuel in my tunes, i was kinda thinking that might have something to do with it, What do you think?

I had an occasional rough 3-4 in my '05 at part throttle, but it was fine at WOT...I believe Nick experienced the same thing after he bought my transmission...I doubt it's in your ECM tuning...I suppose you could load a tune that is stock-like in part throttle areas and see if you get different shifts...

With the tow tune i have for the truck it shifts fine but its probally only 60hp or so!

i spent about 2 hours driving the truck trying to relearn the trans and cleared the 3/4 3/5 taps and didnt change at all. Now its acting like crap all the time, even going into drive its banging into gear hard, only drive though, it goes into reverse like normal. It also is down shifting harder then normal, you can feel it drop each gear while slowing down to a stop?

Im really confused, Its so much easier just to put in what ever gear you want let out the clutch and go!!!!!!

Find a Tech II and put it in Fast Learn????????

I dont really know anyone with a tech 2 in this area. Im gonna mess around some more with it after work today.

3/4 lockup maybe? Mine used to do it fairly badly.

Well last night i loaded totally different Big tune in and cleared and preset the taps and after about 10 miles of driving with about 20 trips up through all the gears, it drives and shifts like a new one? Go figure?

Thanx Larry, ITs worked out for now, but after we take it to the track tonight, tow with it tomarrow and then daily drive it for a few days it will be totally flipped out again im sure, it always dose!!!

Someone needs to come up with a way to program these things like a 4l80 or something, that way you can program it with how to shift insted of it haveing some preprogramed learning curve that it has to relearn every time you put fuel in the truck!!!!:rofl:

Cant you use tow haul for the fun stuff and normal mode for dailey driving only, that would cut down on the learning curve

Yeah i try that but i hate tow haul mode, It down shifts when it dosent need to then it wont upshift till it hits like 3500rpms....AS you can tell im jst not a big ally fan. From what i can tell the newer ones are better but still not my cup a tea!!!

I think its sorta like a jeep thing or something, i just dont understand sometimes!!!!

What we did is find a used TCM and one becomes race only. We are so limited in our passes that we don't have 3 or 4 passes to train the trans.

I wish I could do that for Wendy like we have for Blue. But, I have a broken connector and every time I ask Pat to change it, I have to hear the 10 min. speech of how my truck could become permanently disabled
