S400 Turbo help

A little background, I recently purchased a Peterbilt with a 60 series Detroit motor. I was under the impression it has an s475 but upon further measurement the inducer measures 70.5 mm. It is a 1.32 a/r, T-6, and I would assume a 96mm turbine but I don't have it apart to measure.

Would there be any improvement to turning this turbo into an a 75mm? The truck could use an extra 30 or 40 hp and I know I can get the computer retuned or upgrade the fuel system but right now upgrading the existing turbo would be the cheapest and easiest upgrade. I'm not looking to add a bunch of hp because my clutch won't take it I'm sure. I bought a 75mm billet wheel for my pickup (but had thoughts of putting it in this truck for "testing" purposes) so I will have a cast compressor wheel and can either machine the housing or pick up a used one somewhere cheap.

So without upgrading fuel or tuning will increasing the compressor side 5mm be beneficial or will I just waste my time?

Lots of people put s400's on them as a cheaper replacement. Is there a tag on the turbo or does it have the Detroit emblem on the compressor and a 6 blade cast wheel? Factory they had 1.34 t6 Garrett gt45's with a 70mm 6 blade compressor... Some guys put the BW 171701(71mm box turbo) and others use BW 171702(75mm box turbo). The 75mm runs great, especially with a SuperSeries60 tuned ecm's... We swapped the 75mm billet drop in 6 blade compressor on my brother's 1994 W900, but it has been tuned for a year, it runs damn good.

Exactly, and the exhaust is the same 5" marmon and the o-ringed comp outlet 90* elbow v-bands right up and 5" compressor inlet, closest fit you can get, imo

Not to mention the little extra compressor wheel should add a little performance without costing spool up time.

This isn't my first rodeo with the 60 series. My other Pete (91') has a 60 and still has the Garrett turbo. When it was overhauled the previous owner took it from 425 hp to 450 or 470 hp (mechanic wasn't sure). It runs good for what it is. My new truck (92') says on the valve cover 425 hp. I'd like to get it to where my other truck is without spending a bunch of money, trashing the trans, or blowing it up.

Most of what I've read on the net about turning them up is all old information and its hard to find a well known place that is doing this. My mech said he can turn it up to 450 hp through the computer but I will go from 2100 max rpm to 1800 rpm and I don't have enough gears for that. Messing with the computer and/or adding a chip makes me really nervous since I'm dealing with a $20K motor that will be run with the pedal on the floor all day.

The s475 seems to be a turbo of choice among Detroit people, just didn't know if I will benefit from making mine bigger or not. Tag on the turbo says bw s400s007. I'm not opposed to computer tuning and if you've got some good info on who or how to do it I'm all ears. Like I said I'm not looking for a full on build, just looking for a few extra ponies.

Honestly, if you're a foot on the floor runner, why would you want to turn up the power?
Adding any power to a truck that works that hard greatly compromises reliability and longevity. You know that tho haha

At work we haul produce with 9 trucks and 9 reefers. Small warehouse, small company. They do not stop rolling and we greatly depend on reliability. And we also greatly depend on warranties. I wish my old man would let me tune and delete one of our new trucks. Just got 9 2015 FL Cascadia's 450hp dd15 Detroits. No chance in hell I will ever touch one with anything aftermarket tho lol

That said an s475 out of the box can provide enough air to surpass your hp goal. And I can't see it spooling much different then what you have now. And it's cheap as hell. So win, win, win.

**** the new dd15 rear compressor mount stupid 3 fuel filter design and parts are ridiculous since it's a Mercedes venture. Also I hate the skirts on the cascadias I'm not fat by any mean and can barely get under them. Also don't over torque oil pan plug the pan is fiberglass and the fitting has a bit on back side that gets loose and leaks Detroit has a special tool but is 706 dollars

We are coming from 450hp ISX cummins in KW's. 2012-2013 models.
Those motors just about broke us. 4 blown engines and countless other major problems. 1-2 trucks were down EVERY week. All 9 had trouble getting over 5.2mpg. Each one burned over 1.5 gallons of oil in a 3100 mile trip. A couple were burning over 3 gallons a trip. All work was covered under warranty and the authorized cummins dealership that did all repairs knew of the oil usage. Yet nobody wanted to actually fix the problem.

So it can't get much worse. These trucks barely have 4000 miles on them and are already getting 6mpg. Some drivers getting close to 6.3.

Btw, side fairings pop off easily. 4 bobby pins per side.

I will agree. Upon popping the hood of the first truck we received, I thought I was looking at a spaceship motor.

Please tell me they don't have DEF issues....
