i picked up a s300 turbo that i am going change the wheels in it. The specs are: 62mm comp wheel and 65mm exhaust wheels, also its a .80ar exhaust hsg. My question is to the people that have these turbos; what would be a better choice in turbine wheels? i am torn between the 71mm and the 74mm exhaust wheels. i want fast spooling, all around driveability (daily diver). This turbo will be replacing the ihi in my twins. I am also considering using a 65mm titanium ball milled comp. wheel.

mine has a 74 wheel done by woodruff diesel and i like it. ive never had a 71 but it spools great. can tow whatever i want. i would go ahead and get the 66 mm comp wheel. it wont be that big of a difference.

do you need a ton of fuel down low to light it? i dont have dual fuelers, and i dont want a bunch of smoke rolling out at every light.

no, dual fuelers really only help up top for the most part. just dont put big injectors in it if you dont want it hazing all the time. i drove mine for a short period of time without dual cp3's and its fine. i meant to add earlier, i dont know what the .80 a/r is but i think thats the 14cm cast. if so you will run into drive pressure issues in a twins setup like trent did. you'll either have to get the pucks changed to 7/8" like trents or find a ss housing

you might check with some of the turbo shops. its a htt housing so you could always just call them, but they probably want an arm and a leg. try chris(engineered diesel) pm me for his number. or try gillet diesel. they are who trent deals with and they know turbos real well.

Vaz , if you take that housing apart you can punch out the 5/8's waste gate ports to around 13/16" - 7/8" for free put the high throw cover on it , and it will flow enough for the twins , with the stock 5/8" ports my setup would put out 60 psi with only 22 coming from the big charger with the gate all the way loose , once the gate was punched out it was around 52-53 with 30 psi coming from the big charger and a medium gate setting . The SS housing is worth it if you have the money it spools nice and the gate is bigger, on the stainless version i would go with the tight A/R ( 13cm ) because the gate is so large you can get away with it . I didnt loose much if any drive pressure going to the 16cm housing from the 14cm , I would choose the 71mm wheel if your just generally having fun with it , if you plan to run it hard with dual cp3's or go bigger on the atmosphere go with the 74mm turbine , my turbo setup with the 71mm turbine wheel / 66mm comp wheel still towed better than stock with awesome egt's .

I haven't used a 71 exhaust wheel in my current turbo but the 74 and 16cm stainless housing works really well. I drive daily and tow my equipment around as needed. I will be going with the bigger twins this year. I had a 14 cm cast housing before and like the 16 stainless better. I noticed that the torque is flatter with the 16 and it spools a little quicker than the 14 did. I did notice a drop in drive pressures with the change.

I think i would have seen a drop also as a single , but i proved to myself that the restriction ( if you want to call it that ) in my truck was the S480 not the top turbo . No matter what i did i could not get the DP down to less than 62 psi with out running less power in turn less boost ( peak hp around 700 )
