Hey guys I've gotten bored with my evo and am looking to root it or do something cool, just wondering what all it will change on the phone, like will it still look and operate the same or be totally different? Is it risky, etc.?

LOL i jsut did this to my phone a week ago. evo 4g as well.

Do you have the newest update? i believe its 2.3.3 is the newest one. depending on your update will depend on what system you use to root it.

Rooting it wont change how your phone is now. it will work and act the same as it did before accept you can now download a wireless tether app so you can use your phone as a wireless router and use its internet for your computer. You can also download other apps that let you do more indebth things to the phone you couldnt before like removing all the apps your provider puts on the phone you cant get rid of.

Personally, once youget the rooting done, look at changing roms and playing around with kernels. its like hopping up your duramax but on a phone level lol. you can get better batt life, hav the phone work smoother and faster, and overclock the cpu for certain games and what not if you like. you can also add a sbc kernel that will charge the phone an extra 10% that HTC wont let happen for fear of charges overcharging the Li-on batt or shortening life span. its a long discussion on xda-developers.com but i run a sbc on mine and love it. battery last longer during the day and with the kernel im running i get better over all battery life.

its kinda risky if you dont follow the directions correctly but really im a total newb to that stuff and had it rooted in 4 hours (i was doing stupid things like not turing my anti-virus off which wouldnt let my phone work with the computer). its an easy 30 min now that i know how

Interesting. I've got easy-tether pro on mine without rooting it but been reading a little on it. Would like to get rid of all the stupid apps that came on it that I don't use.

thats the exact reason why i rooted mine. i didnt want to pay 30-40 bucks a month for internet when i could just wifi my phone at home and have unlimited use of it. i used easy tether too but the cord got annoying and in the way with my laptop

Ok sweet! ya I just did the last update on mine. I was just worried if it would wipe all my music and pics, etc. so which rooting setup did you use? I have the extended battery on mine so thats usually not an issue anymore but would be nice to delete a lot of crap off of it

i used the revolutionary revoke one. They tell you to clear your phone and do a system restore before doing the root process but i did it without wiping my phone as i was good. if you download titanium backup and mybackup from the market to backup your phone, it will save msot fo your settings/call logs/contacts/recent messages/pictures and so on to either your sd card or online. whats nice is when you load up your new recovery into the phone, you can do a full recovery back up that will literally save everything in your phone as is at that point in time as a back up incase something goes a rye when your messing with it. it saved my ass many times when i was trying to get my new ROM to load. the revolutionary revoke will walk you through all that, its jsut a bit hard to grasp what they are talking about at first if you dont understand the terminology used or understand how it all works together.
