Guys help me decide on this.

My engine has a hole in # 6 piston, crank is shot, & center 3 main caps are junk due to spun bearings.

Looking to end up with a SOLID stock engine as cheap as I can.

SO to fix this engine=

New blank main caps---$xxxx are they available?
$150 Line bore from a major/good performance engine shop
$75 for cam bearing install & cleaning & New plugs
$150 for balancing
Engine is already honed
good used crankshaft $300
Master Gasket kit $500
Good used piston $40
Mahle Rings $325
Camshaft Gear Retainer bolt $12
Rod Bolts 70.00 for set 16 total
Flywheel bolts 18.00 for set 8 total
Main bolts62.00
Head bolts 204.00 for both sides

$1906+main cap cost

OR buy a lbz shortblock with 80K miles for $1500
gaskets $250
headbolts $204
Flywheel bolts $18

$1972

The biggest question is: line boring these gear to gear engines....the block bearing surface is smooth no wear, the caps have substantial wear & WILL have to be replaced. Ohio Crankshaft (http://www.ohiocrank.com/home.html) said that on the block side they wont take out any metal unless its out of round.

Attempt line boring or get the shortblock?

I have to check my connecting rods & make sure they are all perfectly round....if anything else is bad I'm for sure going with the shortblock.

Id say go with the short block if you know its good and try and sell the good stuff thats left of your motor to try and recoup the cost.

shortblock all the way.. no brainer. Should also be able to find a good shortblock for less than 1500.

I'd say you "went to plaid" and pushed the dilithium crystals a bit too far.

Use the 80K shortblock.

Short block sounds like the way to go. If you KNOW it's in good shape...80k is really not much if it's not been abused.

Building an engine, especially one that requires line boring the mains etc. opens yourself up to more potential issues. Shouldn't be any problems, but it's more of a possibility with that much work needing to be done.

Good luck though, hope it works out for you!!
