Rebuilding a GT4202R

What is the deal as far as rebuilding go's on the ball bearing turbos?

How much does rebuilding it cost?

Can any turbo shop rebuild them?

Does it have to be sent back to Garrett for a rebuild?

If used for sled pulling, how long could one expect the GT4202R to last before it needs rebuilding?

Why would someone choose a ball bearing turbo over a journal bearing turbo?

Basicly buy a new center section to rebuild a R turbo. I could not justify the cost of the ball bearing myself. I run a 4202 plain bearing.

all garett turbos have to be sent back to the factory to be rebuilt bearing wise (this is what i was told so dont mark my word)

John thers a guy not to far away from you that has done many GT42's Pretty reasonable price as well. $800 IIRCC depending on what it needs

I think it is www.fvpdiesel.com he use to be partners with Brad and the terminator sled IIRCC

had mine rebuilt and the center section cost the most. i think it was 1700.

If used for sled pulling, how long could one expect the GT4202R to last before it needs rebuilding? depends how much heat you put it there is a little heat shield in the back to much heat and it can melt and tear the ball bearing section up

Why would someone choose a ball bearing turbo over a journal bearing turbo ?ball bearing spools quicker than a journal bearing

I figured it was going to be expensive, but $800-$2000+ to rebuild! Wow!

ball bearing spools up quicker but I think for sled pulling only they arent very necessary.

Call Dennis at Fair Valley Performance (FVP) hes just outside of sauk city. IIRC he does custom turbo work. Im not certain I jus thvae to buy parts for my truck through him due to arrangements with one of my sponsors.
