So I bought stuff to change my rear Diff. Fluid afew weeks ago, I go to do it tonight.. I bought 2 different Gaskets, well come to find out neither one of them works, and now the rear-end is all open.. Wife left to go to the store and no way to the autoparts store.. What Can I do to help protect it from the moisture tonight? Put the cover back on with a few bolts?

I take the cover of. Clean everything up and inspect it. Then just used black silicone to reseal it instead of a gasket.

Dodge offers a nice rubber clad steel gasket that is cheap compared to the gm paper gasket

How come you had to remove the cover to drain the fluid?

with 235K miles plus.. I wanted to change the fluid and clean it up, Wow was it nasty inside.. I did'nt see anything Bad, like chunks of metal or anything..But nasty fluid and a dirty Cover on the inside..which is now, nice and clean.. I guess I'll just do RTV in the morning, I did put the cover on with 2-bolts so it should be ok for the night.

I found one for it finally, after helping the Guy search at Oreilly's.. There computer kept saying it was a 9.5 rear-end and showed the 2 gaskets I already had.. I had him search up a 3500 Rear-end and found my gasket...Finally got it back together, and now I'm a quart short.

If you use the silicone, be sure to make the bead a 1/4 wide and go around the inside diameter around the cover bolts, if you go outside you will usually find your gear oil leaking through your bolt holes. Make sure you let it 'setup' before you put the cover on so its stiff enough. Don't use silicone on paper gaskets because you can create a leak by doing so.

I silicone my my front and rear differentials covers back on. Never have used a gasket on any of my trucks. Never had any leak issues with silicone..
