Here's my newbie post, lol. I've been searching for a week and haven't really found an answer to this that wasn't a couple of years old. Since new stuff is always coming out, I decided to ask.

The truck is a 2001 LB7, bone stock except for an aftermarket 4" exhaust from the downpipe back. I'm wanting to upgrade the supply side of the fuel system (for reliability), and then put a tune on the PCM. Not looking to break any records here, just need a little extra. :D

Which lift pumps on the market right now run quiet, and have a nice LOOONG lifespan? It should come with a good quality harness as well(Hopefully). I want to put it on, and never think about it again. I don't think I'm interested in additional filtering, unless you guys convince me otherwise. I use WIX premium filters, and know to replace it every 10-15K.

+1 for Kennedy, I have his twin setup on mine. Life span is supposed to be 10k+ hours. Can't hear them run even when the engine isnt. :thumb:

I also run twin Kennedy Diesel pumps for years! If anything goes wrong with them they are flow through also. Means you won't get stranded.

Raptor on mine, it's loud but is dependable and was easy to install so far it's alright and has a lifetime warranty at the time of sale so that was a plus. Only thing it does is let the regulator sneak pressure up a few pounds every month. Just reset it is all I do. It sure made this LBZ run better with EFI and dyno tuned.

So, it looks like Kennedy and Fass are good, and also quiet. That's good to know. Are there others?

Well, I won't try to kid myself and go with a loud pump to start with just because of a good price. I'd just end up replacing it with a quiet one, I'm positive about that. BUT...... could I get you to explain the regulator thing? Thank you. Also, would I have to do something like that with the Kennedy or Fass?

Could I get you to elaborate? Sorry, I'm new to this.

The MITUSA is a belt driven pump that runs off the engine, not something for most DURAMAX trucks as it is beyond overkill for most of us. The pressure regulator is what limits the amount of pressure the lift pump supplies. The KENNEDY pump is a centrifugal pump and does not use one as it is designed to move large volumes of fuel at low pressure. The FASS system I believe comes preset, but some systems are adjusteable.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I saw MITUSA and thought it was some pump from a Mitsubishi. :woott:

And the regulator thing makes sense too now. For some reason, I was thinking of the factory fuel pressure regulator, and it just didn't make sense. But now I wonder why the lift pump pressure regulator would need regularly reset. Seems like the pump manufacturer needs to improve the product if that's the case.

Anyways, thank you for the explanations.

On an LB7, good filtration is paramount. The injectors are already prone to failure, they don't need the help of shitty filters. For starters id spend 100bucks and buy the Nicktane fuel filter adapter. It will allow you to use a CHEAPER, BETTER, fuel filter. The Cat filter is 2 micron (waaaay better than oem fuel filter which is around 10 micron I believe) filter is anywhere from 15-20 bucks @ the local Caterpillar dealer

Now IMO you are ready for the lift pump. I run an AirDog system and it is fairly quiet. Well built unit and never given me any problems. I have heard enough Fass systems in person to know they are much louder. Same with Raptor pumps (nice simple design though). Anyways, the Airdog system also has a water separator which is important because 1) water is a contaminant and 2) if you go with the Nicktane/Cat mod you will loose water separator feature. I'm not familiar with the Kennedy system but its not getting great reviews for nothin.

My 1792 started making bad, bad sounds last night (0deg outside)... Drove 30 miles to home no issues but I figured it was on the way out... So I ordered a single Kennedy (have homebuilt filter setup). Now today the pump sounds fine lol..

Anyway, anybody know the max a single Kennedy is good for? I'm in the 500-525 to the wheels area... (deleted front filter, run 1 big Donaldson etc.)

Just wondering if I'll be buying another one :(

It is important to filter any fuel before it goes into a pump, because dirty fuel will kill any pump fast.

I've got dual kennedy lift pumps as well. I love them and they don't make a sound, every once and while I'll crawl under the pickup to make sure they work or hook up my fuel pressure gauge so see if I need to replace the fuel filter.

It say a single pump will support over 450hp so I would think you'd be fine at 500hp plus but I'd give John a call to check or just get 2 and be done with it.

M.I.T.U.S.A is an acronym for "made in the USA" they are belt driven, perfectly quiet and carry a limited lifetime guarantee. The product does look very enticing, but has its own draw backs. Not sure how/if it has a filtering system like and air dog, but there are ways to improve the stock components.

I have had no issues with my AD2 165. For all intents and purposes i love it.
I have my lift pump gravity fed by a fuel sump and it still make alot of noise, i only hear it when im waiting for the glow plugs, or if i didn't pull the fuse when downloading new tunes, in the drive thru, etc.
If you want I'll p.m you my # and I'll let you hear my air dog, its a bit quieter than the fass pump, or maybe its just the type of noise it makes? Seems quieter. But it still pretty loud, however you dont hear it when the truck s running, it just gets added into the presense of the diesel, the diesel aura.

The air dog and fass systems are easy to install, easy to maintain, have been proven to work mile after mile, gallon after gallon, delivering air free, water free, clean positively fed #2 to your cp3 and injectors.
