Questions regarding boring a duramax block

Ok so the machine shop called today and told me that my block has 3 thousandths of cylinder wear. I believe the service limits allow 4 thousandths?
The shop also said he believes that diamond tooling is required to bore a duramax block. So my questions are: is 3 thousandths of cylinder wear ok to do my build on or does it need a new block/bore, and if so is diamond tooling required?

Update: I got in touch with guy at SoCal and he was very helpful. He said since I'm buying pistons anyway I'td be silly not to bore it and standard carbide tooling will be fine. Thanks Guy!

Depends on the pistons. Are you reusing yours? If so that would be pretty loose on the piston/wall clearance. If you are going forged you are good to go. A little honing to meet the clearance requirements on forged and you're good. Honing/Boring is done by most shops using stones. I prefer the diamond stones myself. It takes using shop with the right experience period. If he knows about DMax motors and has experience then consider using him. If not I would look elsewhere for a shop familiar with machining on them.
