If you don't mind me asking - what host is DD run through?
It's lightning fast and never seems to be down...
I am running a small photography proof website for a family business.. All it does is display image proofs that I've knocked the resolution out of (because some of our users are on dial up still) and for the life of me I can't get them to fix the HORRID load times.
Here's my latest load time for a page with 1 SMALL SIMPLE GIF image at the top...

I use mysql for the sorting and management of the DB but the MYSQL server on my host is so damn busy it's always a fight to get something done!

Startlogic is my host that's giving me problems. Although they are nice and the customer service is friendly, it seems to be all canned responses and "we could not replicate the problem' or 'it's not on our side of thing' answers...
