I don't know if some of you know what I do for a living but. I am an office equipment service tech during the day. I work on Copiers, printers, Document scanners and Microfilm equipment (yes that stuff still exists lol). And I work on an build computer/server systems along with managed IT stuff.

I have had my own business doing repairs on this stuff for the past 11 years, started when I was a sophomore in hs.

The market isn't favoring small outfits like mine lately due to stupid insurance requirements by certain counties out here, LA being the worst. Its been hard getting work lately.

So I decided to apply for a Big copier/printer company (won't say yet until everything is final just in case..). I just got off the phone with the manager out of the Orange County office and In a couple of weeks when he gets back from management training I have a lunch interview with him and hopefully get the ball rolling.

I have subcontracted for other service bearus before so nothing new here, just the tax forms and write offs are different..:roflmao:

I had RIVCO Motorsports full time for a while and thought thats what I wanted to do, boy did that dream die quick. Its fun still as a hobby don't get me wrong, but the professional/business side of things and the way the industry is going currently across the board is killing certain aspects imo.

But I think I made a good move here. They offer tons of benefits and the manager I talked to told me his bosses basically said "do what it takes to get him" He hasn't heard of anyone under the age of 40 who understands Microfilm technology like I do, let alone know what the hell it is..:roflmao:. My grandpa used to work for Kodak in the 70s&80s as a service tech instructor, then my dad got into the business then well, me.
I have actually worked on some of this company's equipment in the past since I was 10ish basically so I feel comfortable going this route. They did tell me I might be skipping a few steps in the employment process and get "promoted" to instructor for their Micrographics equipment, as they still sell reader printers/scanners, and I was told I am the only applicant with that on my resume.

I feel good about this. I just wanted to share with you all.

Happy New year!

And Casper says hi! I have actually been busy with wrapping service contracts up before the end of 2018 both him and Betty have been sitting. But Betty is going under the knife soon. shes getting some lazy boy features...:D

Good for you Nate! :D

Thank you sir! I'm curious to see how my meeting goes. they are allowing me to continue to service my two large managed IT services clients, so thats good. I have had these two since highschool. I have manage to hand off the rest of the years to another guy I worked with but these two I know wouldn't function if I stopped. :D

Congratulations!!
I know the feeling on insurance, work, etc; reason I had to stop doing turbo's and working on vehicles and go back to industry.

Hope it all plays out to be what you want.

It's always good having that odball niche every now and again. Good luck

I always thought about running my own shop, but working for someone else 4 days a week, and not having to worry about anything when I walk out the door every day is awesome

Thank you! I hope so too.

I mainly gave up the shop full time due to me being in a small nitch market, it was impossible to keep a constant flow coming in. And yeah the legalities and other bs was a major factor also. I outgrew myself within the first few months and needed to hire, but couldn't find anyone that I trusted, When I did find someone, the writing was on the wall to get out before I lost everything. It was an experience for sure, but if I was given a chance to do it over, I wouldn't, I would continue working on Microfilm and scanner stuff, Cleaner hands.

But going to work for someone else, I decided that because trying to do business with a lot of places in CA require big insurance umbrellas and want everything stupid cheap. Plus the professional services market out here is changing so I figured I take a step sideways and start learning new things and see where that goes.

I sometimes regret opening mine. I made some bad decisions that I wish I can correct, but what can you do, I def. learned from those mistakes.

I enjoy vehicles as a hobby and what not. I still work on my own and a few others. I get engines in here for headgaskets from time to time, but what little I get I enjoy now. My "professional" presence in the business now is training guys how to use the EFILive platform helping setup their PCs up for data logging and making things sooo much easier for them. And showing people how to use Tech2s and MDIs, That part I enjoy. Its not hand dirty work and I like doing it plus it puts a little $$$ in the hobby fund.

Good luck with the new venture. Hopefully they stand by letting you continue to service your longest customers.

Anytime you can spend a little free time earning extra cash by doing something you like on the side involving teaching others what you know in the hobby.

Best of luck in the future endeavors, and always remember that any day at work doing what you like makes the day go by faster. Never quit learning as someone once told me that the more you know, the more you are able to sell yourself to stay employed.

I got a few minutes before I walk in. Interview is at 11.

The gentleman I spoke with said my resume was well written for my age group.

Very excited. Early birthday present you can say, as my birthday is Wednesday. I'll be 27.

We have 1000's of fax machines and copiers, our primary communication is through fax. We've had the same xerox guy for about 38yrs. He seems to be treated well and we keep him busy. Good luck
