Has anyone painted the grille on their silverado? I want to paint the chrome on the grille to match the truck with a black bow tie. Talked to a painter and he said he would have a hard time getting the paint to stick to the chrome. There was a truck on here for sale that was blue and he had it done but I cant find it now...

He's right. I know guys and even my own, who have destroyed grilles trying to paint over the chrome. And even if u were to sand deep enough to get it off. The end result of the paint job would be wavy almost like shity body work on a door. Cause sanding past the chrome takes the material away. And bad prep work always will come back to haunt u.

The best thing to do would be to buy a paintable one from any aftermarket part dealer. Hell i think u can get a paintable one from Auto Zone even IIRC.

I sanded off the chrome on my grill and it's now gloss black. The grill's isnt real chrome anyways, and it can be sanded off. ;)

Trust me buy a paintable grille and paint it. Listen to the painter and leave ur stocker alone. And its all a matter of what the grille is exposed to and how it is preped. But i have never personally sanded on a lb7 grille. But as far as the 06 and up trucks once u get past that fake chrome shit. The material is smc or tpms whatever the F. Once sanding has begun past the "chrome" there are going to be low spots unless ur God and can sand perfectly strait.

mine on my 01 is painted also. The chrome was peeling off of mine, so we continued to peel it all off. We scuffed it with a scotch brite pad, and it turned out good, and has held up the last few years.

The chrome peals off very easy all you need is to start on one corner with a razor and peal from their. Then scuff the bare plastic and spray it with adhesive promoter then the paint will stick to the plastic.:thumb:

I peeled my chrome off too and used the plastic primer and then chevy orange engine enamel. Its lasted for almost 4 years now. Its starting to chalk out a little now though so I might actually spray it with a base coat and clear coat. The chrome takes a little bit to get off but its doable.
