How are you guys painting over the chrome or are you? Buying paint able bumpers? Paint guy told me today they can't do it because it would eventually peel off. Is there a way and this guy is an idiot? what am I missing?

There are etching primers but I don't know how well they hold up.

Acid or blast to remove the coating then powder coat would be my suggestion.

I was going to buy new paintable bumpers but figured I'd try it with my chrome ones first anyway.

He's an idiot. I had mine professionally done by a guy who says most people say it will flake Bc they don't want to put in the prep work to do it. Sadly thats8/10 painters. Mine was done by a certified PPG painter. Lifetime warranty on the pieces, yes LIFETIME WARRANTY on bumpers that were previously chrome. Gotta sand all the chrome down to where it's no longer shiny, etch it, then regular painting from there on out.

Been a little over 3 months and it's holding up great.

120 on an orbital to rough/sand it very well with (no shine left anywere)then either an etch then high build prime or i like to use an epoxy primer,Its a direct to metal primer with a good build so you can block if need be.A really good epoxy is made by spi and comes in black, white and grey.On metal bumpers i like to use a polyurathane paint for durability.

I grew up riding and building dirtbike and quads. I have got a pretty good hook up with a powdercoater. If he can exact the color i will go that route. Honestly powdercoat never really came to mind until you guys said something. Same prep as painting? Sand it down until it's not shiney?

On chrome i use a 80 grit grind wheel then epoxy prime it then primer surfacer ( high build) then block it with 400 ready for paint

I'm pretty sure the place that did mine sandblasted the chrome to give it a dull grippy texture bit the chrome was still there obviously. They guaranteed the powdercoat over the chrome so I went with it. 2 years later it still looks new with no rock chips. AMD that's after 2 winters of red cinder rock used on the roads instead of salt.

Pictures don't do it justice but any decent powdercoater place can get a match. For mine they had about 3 colors that matched but this one I got has powdercoater clear over the regular color so it's extremely durable.

My powder coat guy said he can match the paint and he needs to see how big they are to give me a price. I want my center grille bar redone too. It's aluminum and the paint didn't adhere...it peeling :'(
