p0336
So here's my latest story with the truck:
The truck has had a rough idle for a while. Lately it had gotten worse. It would really shake the truck at idle and the balance rates were all over the place with two of the injectors over +14. Thursday morning as I got to work the truck died and wouldn't start. It would crank but nothing would happen. I got out my efilive and up came dtc p0336 which happens to be the crank position sensor. The Lab was generous enough to let me leave the truck there overnight so I caught a ride home and jumped on the computer to try to figure out what was really wrong and what I needed to do to fix it.
Sure enough, between this site, DP, and duramax forum I pieced together what I thought was wrong. A few buddies met me after work Friday with a trailer to drag it back to Sandwich.
The diagnosis was quick after I pulled out the crank sensor instead of the cam sensor. There is a reluctor wheel attached to the crank that has teeth on it that are seen by the crankshaft position sensor. Mine, which I found out is more common than I'd like to admit, was loose. Problem found.
The solution is to take everything off the front of the motor to get the front cover off. This took two of us about five hours as Ive never done this before. The local dealership had none of the parts needed but they did have a great diagram of how everything was situated in the motor. After many phone calls and sending two people two different ways, I got started taking the motor accessories off. All I really needed was a new crank seal, new bolts to put in the reluctor wheel, a new water pump as mine had 102,000 miles on it plus fresh coolant and oil.
We finally got the front cover off and put the bolts back in with red loctite this time cleaned the cover and put the whole thing back together. It went together much faster than it came apart and before I knew it we were firing it back up. The truck lit right up and idled smoother than it had in a long time. I did have two leaks. One fuel leak on the ficm where I forgot to tighten the banjo bolt and one coolant leak where we forgot to tighten two bolts on the water pump. both easy fixes.
Two days later, the truck is running great and idles smooth. It fires right up and I think the aircon is even cooler. I know this is long winded but I thought I would try to give back a little and maybe help someone else with this same problem.
