I have a 2005 3500 Dually. I bought it used to pull a bg toy hauler and has proved to be a big mistake. I am in Phoenix Arizona, so i can be pulling up step grades with an ambient temperature of 117 degrees. Truck runs around town fine, but once you hook 3000 lbs to 16000 lbs on it it will overheat. Both tranny and engine, it is a race to see which one overheats first. I have found out that 04.5 through 2005 have had this problem historically. The fix was supposed to be a new air intake which pulls air from the bottom of the truck and not engine compartment. I also replaced the throat to the turbo to provide more air. I installed the deeper tranny pan which worked great on my 2003 2500HD, but I saw no change on the 2005, I have put a new clutch fan in which works fine. The dealership has gone through it at least three times, cooling system fine, tranny fine etc. No one has a clue!!! But I have seen them on the road pulling up the grades and with bigger trailers than mine. So I have a hard time with the answer it is just the way these trucks are. Thanks for any help! Robaz

Have they done the water pump? Maybe the impeller is just spinning on the shaft instead of pumping water like it should

Is your only indicators of overheating the cluster? Either try a friends cluster or a secondary way to verify the coolant temp independent of any factory systems. We had a 3500 do the same thing and it was a cluster issue for some reason. Has the a/c condenser, Inter cooler, and radiator been split apart to see if you have a rats nest of road debris built up between each? You did mention installing the LBZ turbo mouth piece but what about the rest of the air cleaner sys?

If the trans is overheating due to a slip it will heat the coolant too as it runs through the radiator. Combine that with hot day(115*+), coolant that is already at operating temp( 200*+), and any sort of blockage in the cooling stack up front you will overheat for sure. Are you running any kind of grill cover/guard up front?

Regardless of the engine coolant overheating, you still need to solve the trans overheat issue. Are you towing in 'tow/haul' mode? I advise upgrading the trans coolers on all the trucks that tow regularly, especially in the heat. Once the trans isnt overheating, you might be able to better pinpoint the engine overheat issue.

has the dealer tried replacing the thermostats? get one to stick close and shes gunna heat up.

Give us a little feedback on how you tow, how and when it starts to over heat (hills, flat ground, ect). is it doin it now when its 85 out or only after a certain temp? does it puke any anitfreeze out when it starts getting hot? how heavy is the trailer? List off everything you have aftermarket on the truck as well please.

yes but it can also work visa versa. the little air cooler isnt gunna do much when the coolant temp is running 230+, not to mention heat soak on that cooler due to the over heated stack behind it. either way, this isnt gunna be an easy diag over the internet :D
