So i noticed the other day, my blend door for the recirc/outside air doesnt like to stay on recirculate. If i start the truck with the system already on recirc and a/c, you will hear air being drawn in under the dash like it should be. as soon as i start driving it will close back up and switch to outside air. Buttons on the hvac controller still show recirc and a/c pressed on. if i come to a stop, turn a/c off and hit outside air, the turn a/c back on and the recirc back on, it will work till i start moving again. if i try it with the truck moving, it stays on recirc for 5 sec then switches back.

anyone heard of this? its not a stripped blend door as it will move when commanded and hold the door there (ive tried pusing it back with a screwdriver and its pretty solid). So all i can figure is its either the hvac controller (where all the knobs and switches are), bad wire or blend door actuator. Im pretty sure all these blend doors are actuated electroniclly and not off vacuum but acts like its lost vacuum if that makes sense.

My truck has similar problem. Fresh air door stopped working last year about the time it reached 100 deg out. Only operates when commanded if you push it on it but soon closes and stops responding. Tried to get to it to replace since dealer wants like a grand. Could only get it disconnected after removing airbag and I believe the on star receiver. Apparently the whole dash and center console have to be removed. I've already tried removing the center console and aborted once.

three knob manual. you couldnt get auto air in the HDs when my dad bought the truck back in late 01 or it would have had it.

yeah to replace the blend door motor, you have to pull the dash. Least in most cases. i have not looked to see how to get to that blend door but it wont be fun. I almost think its the head unit though. usually the blend doors just stop working or strip out. these seems electrical

Was just making sure. GM service info lists both auto and manual. Could possibly be the actuator traveling too far causing the internal position sensor circuit to go open. Once that happens the default position is to the outside.

Don't quote me on this but you may be able to sneak the actuator out after pulling the air bag module out. Its been a while since I've had an '01-02 dash apart though.

hmm never thought of that. ill have to see if i can get back in there. But sounds as if is the blend door actuator over the head unit?

The actuator is to the left of the actual recirc air door, above the HVAC case assembly. Definitely crammed in there

And I have a good friend that has an '01 Suburban with the three knob auto HVAC in it. And its 2wd non the less. Kind of a rare find around here haha.

yeah mitchell ondemand shows a few guys have been able to pull the actuator without removing the dash. just have to drop the glove box, use a short 7/32 socket and a small ratchet.

Im gunna try the relearn deal first but dunno if that only pertains to the auto air setups

If you can get in there and get it out without too much trouble, you can switch it with the temperature actuator which is on the bottom of the HVAC case and easily accessible. Both actuators should be the same part number. Just don't plug the actuators in until they are bolted to the HVAC doors as the actuators may do a self test. If there's nothing there to stop them they'll over-travel and stop working and (according to GM) will be damaged. But in reality you'll just have to pop them apart and reset the gear/shaft to the middle position.
