Opinions on these Pistons

What do you all think of these pistons? I can't afford to buy things multiple times so I'm trying to be sure these seem good and are reasonably priced.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=361786

For those that can't get on dieselplace, they are stock lb7 pistons that are just delipped, not decked any. They had 70K miles on them. $600 shipped.

Let me know.

I'm sure people would comment but with out knowing the extent. Of the pistons it's tough to say jmo

What were they bored out to? What is the radius on them? You need to know these things first to determine if the compression ratio will be what you want or not.

simon, not sure who delipped them... fromt he pics, they look alright. But I'm not sure I'd know if something where off or not. I'm not real crazy about the small radius he left on them. Seems a larger radius without taking out too much piston top surface would be better for the heat spikes on the edges of the bowl (the whole reason for delipping inthe first place).

I've estimated the machining on pistons to be in the neighborhood of $500 in general. Does that seem high, low or about right?

Thanks for the input. I do realize it's hard to know if they are really alright or not without having them in-hand or checked out by shop. Thats just how it is with any used part purchase. I was just looking for opinions. Thanks for sharing guys.

iowally, the guy estimates them at 17:1. Says he just removed the lip and nothing more. If they really are 17:1, that'd be fine by me. I wouldn't want to go below 16:1.

If the whole lip is gone they are probably well below 17:1.;)

Seems like an so so deal. I would like to see the sides of the pistons. I am guessing he used an engine lathe with hard jaws. If he did you need to be real careful. The skirt of the pistons is tapered and larger than the head. To me it looks like he just bored out the lip and then used sandpaper to cap the radius into the face. That is why they look like that. I would guess low 16s for compression.

IMHO to do it correctly You need to bore a set of soft jaws to reach around (not the Neens-MikeL kind;) ) the skirt and grab the head locating off the top ring groove. At least that is how I do it. I have never had any one complain or any one tell me they hurt one I did.

Hey, Mitch though I would throw in my opinion, I would walk away from this, I know that's not what u want to hear but, I can get u a set of new Mahle's at my cost, I'm hooked up with a Jobber, I'll help u anyway I can, hell I build it for u or at least share what I've learned on mine with u, Those piston's may be perfect, but there's alot of work that goes into building one of these motor, an serveral things that have to be bought that can only be used once, if u have to lick your cow twice, trust me I KNOW, good luck my friend call on me anytime,
