Issue....

27* out, start my truck 15 min. before I have to leave, Elevated idle kicks in, automatic heat set at 73*, Go out to leave and the truck is not very warm, temp gauge has only moved a little and it's chilly in the truck. It's not for another 5-10 mins of driving that it will be comfortable.

I have owned it for a year and it has always been this way. Is this just the way it is or is something wrong??

When it's real cold, say mid teens, the elevated idle with run about 30 minutes..

Thanks...

Helps if you plug it in when its really cold out keeps the coolant warm,Also if you have a winter front cover that will help you out even more my truck gets heat great with just the front grill cover on.

I've tried pugging it in, helps a little but not much. Grill cover is not needed around here. Most days are 45+.. It does fine once I get going, it just takes a really long time to get completely warmed up. I'm think the thermostat is stuck like half open.

If you have a infared temperature gun (thermometer), here's what you can do. Fire the truck up and let it run for about 10-15 minutes. Now on the coolant crossover pipe that goes between the cylinder heads, take a temp reading on it below the t-stat, lets say take the reading where the 2 pipe converge into 1. Record the reading. Now where the upper rad hose connects to the engine, take a temp reading right before the upper rad hose connection on the metal t-stat cover/elbow. Record this reading and compare the two. The 1st reading you took should be quite a bit warmer than the 2nd. If they are close together (within probably 10*) your t-stat is stuck open and that will caise your slow warm up condition. If they are not close together continue to take the readings, by continuing to take temp readings you will be able to tell when your t-stat is opening. It may also be opening to early causing you condidtion. Hope this helps.

It takes mine a good 25 min at high idle to overcome temps in the 20's

Here's my solution: Crank the seat heaters til you can fry an egg and start driving. Usually about 5 miles and it's up to temp.

EDIT: I saw your post where the seat heaters quit. My method won't work for you then.:(

Thanks, good idea. I did this and my thermostat is working fine. My truck just takes forever to heat all the way up. I started the truck with an outside themp of 35*. After 20 mins of the truck running the thermostat was still closed and the water temp was 130*. It seems to help some when I plug it in and it starts easier, so I guess I'll go back to doing that.
