Question: Ok, what am I dealing with?

Ok, been reading around this site for a few weeks now, and wile I have less questions, The one's I have come from trying to get a better understanding of this truck.

I have owned it two weeks now, so starting to try to put together some plans for it. Got a hitch installed, and had the bed rinolined. Next will likely be an Airdog II, and an EGR delete...

Now, here comes a problem, I have a 2006 LLY with a 6 speed. All the sites I have found only lost 04-05 LLY with 5 speeds, no 06 LLY's, also LLY's are listed as only having a 5 speed. Do I have some odd ball half mutt with the 1 year older engine, and 1 year newer transmission? Do I buy parts for the 05 LLY or try to locate 06 LLY's, or would I buy for the 06 LBZ?

Another one. And this is a n00b question I am sure, and the term is thrown around so much here, what is limping the trans mean? From reading between the lines, it's not damaged, as most people that mention it say they are still driving. I'm sure everyone but me knows what it means, but google isn't finding it ether, and I would like to know what it is before I have it happen to me and can't ask what it is.

For the record, I do not have anyone in my offroad club that owns a Dmax, nor any friends or coworkers with one, so I am stuck figuring these things out for myself, hence reading my way through this site. I've got quite a bit of exp with diesel's, but I have only dealt with 3 GM diesel's, 2 6.5's, and one 6.2. This is the first 6.6 I have opened the hood on.

The 2006 LLY's are LBZ's in a nutshell. They just have a different stock tune. Everything else is identical. Welcome:thumb:

Yep, 2006LLY = 2006LBZ with different tuning. Definitely a truck to hold on to.

Limping a trans does hurt it, but in most cases not enough to actually kill it and leave you stranded. You should still be able to drive the truck normally. Trouble is, limps will come on easier after that until the trans finally does die.

Limping is usually slipping clutches in the trans. It will "limp" if other problems occur too. It puts the truck in a reduced power state. Some code readers will clear codes and bring it out of limp, some wont.

I thought the 6sp llys had all the lly problems with a better trans?
So lly's with the 6sp have the better head, cp3 and regulator, injectors, h2o pump, radiator and intercooler... etc? I was under the impression the LBZ was much differant?

Any 06' and I mean any truck is pretty much a lbz!!! Doesn't matter that the stankin vin has a 2. If it's A 06 you can pretty much call it a lbz

Ok, so the mechanicl side is an LBZ with a different tune than real LBZ's? So for the EGR delete kits I would go with 2006 LBZ?

And limping the trans is a low power mode... on. the. trans???

I have been looking for what is different between these two. Even so far as to trying to get the service manuals, but most of the time I get those from my dad, and he is currently in a coma for the time being. I want to know what is physically different, what can interchange (the block, crank I know is the same.)

True LLYs end with model year 2005. The "2006 LLY" is simply a LBZ (100%) with a smaller tune in the ECM. All hard parts are LBZ.

I am buying that same truck this week (HOPEFULLY tomorrow). I've read a few people call them "LLZ's". Don't mean to threadjack here, but could a guy find out what kind of tune he has by hooking up to EFI Live and/or running a dyno, even if it's a canned tuner? Either I'm too used to the 4.3 v6 or this duramax is tuned.

Your to used to the v6 :D welcome! And yes you can read the tune put and see if its stock ir modified

I found this.

In 2006, the Duramax LLY received many changes to enhance performance as well as strengthen the engine in order to handle the additional output. While the specifications and general architecture of the engine was unaltered, the following changes were made to the 6.6L Duramax LLY:
• Upgraded cylinder block casting & machining for increases strength.
• Main bearing material upgraded for longevity.
• Compression lowered to 16.8 : 1 from 17.5 : 1.
• Piston pin diameter increased for strength.
• Thicker connecting rod were installed.
• Revised cylinder head design to match lowered compression ratio.
• Maximum fuel injection pressure increased to 26,000+ psi (from 23,000 psi) thanks to a new higher pressure fuel pump.
• New 7 hole injector design. Injectors now spray directly onto glow plugs for easier/quicker starts and reduced emissions during start-up.
• New, faster heating glow plugs.
• Upgraded variable geometry turbocharger for lower emissions and improved efficiency.
• Air induction system altered to reduce engine noise.
• Larger EGR cooler.
• Intake air heater installed to reduce emissions while engine is cold. Decreases engine warm-up time.
• Horsepower increased to 310 hp @ 3,000 rpm, Torque increased to 605 lb-ft @ 1,600 rpm.


This leads me to believe the engine assembly between the 06 LLY and the LBZ is identical, however the LBZ has a better tune. This mirrors the information given on this site, including yours.

my 06 van dmax is mechanically LBZ but only rated for 250hp and considered a LLY
there are a few mech things diff between truck and van though.. mainly cause of packaging.. intake to turbo, CAC pipes and engine harness bail connectors. rad and CAC are different as well.
