Oil pressure

So I'm new to the whole diesel scene. I recently bought an 01 chevy 2500hd LB7 and the oil pressure gauge goes up and down drastically. At idle it's running at like 30 psi and when I give it any gas or I'm running at a steady speed it goes up to like 70 psi. Idk if that's normal or if I need to check something or what that means?

Yeah it's normal, GM gauges fluctuate showing you what's actually going on instead of just sitting in the normal range like most vehicles do these days, like ford.

Oil pump is gear driven so pressure is going to raise and lower with engine RPM's.

It's fine. Minimum is 15 psi @idle and the relief valve for the oil pump is about 80. Sounds like your oil is fairly cool but the stock instrument cluster is not know to be the most accurate. Looking at my Edge warm idle for me is 19-20 and cold I'll see 80ish going through the gears. Usually settles to around 50 after it's hot

Okay cool, thank you guys! Just seemed a little odd to me bc my 02 sierra 5.3 stayed between 40 and 50 and that's what I was used to

Diesels are designed to sustain long hauls under heavy loads. The higher volume of oil and coolant helps remove excess heat.

Congrats on the move to a diesel. A lot of good information available and knowledgeable people here.

That makes complete sense!
Thanks, I'm glad that there are so many helpful people on here bc otherwise I'd be lost. Normally is just ask my dad or uncle about vehicles but they don't know diesels so I'd be screwed lol
