I have a 2002 Duramax with oil gauge problems. It is pegged all the way to the right. It has never moved. It stays there on or off. I took the cluster out to have it checked and all the gauges are in working order. Also the check engine oil light is on and stays on. So I dropped the oil pan and replaced oil level sensor and that did nothing. I was told to change oil pressure switch. After I replaced the oil pressure switch I started it up and the gauge moved for the first time ever and went to 80. But the check engine oil level light stayed on. After about a minute the gauge moved a little and then pegged out to the max again and stayed there. It didi not move any more after that. My question is could I have a bad Pressure switch that was new? The new pressure switch has a year warrenty on it so i am taking it back tommorow. The part store said to check the ground wire as well. Any Ideas?

You could check ground wires but if that is the only thing acting up I doubt it is the problem. More than likely it's a bad pressure sensor .

If you unplug the sensor it pegs out. So perhaps it's shorted?

Is there any history to the truck such as motor swap, ecm changes, accident repairs?

Yes there was a recent motor swap. I changed the oil pressure switch with a new one and nothing still pegged out. So I messed withe the connector and it did move to 75 or 80. The check engine level light has stayed on and never gone off. Could this be something with the motor swap? I ordered a oil pressure connector end and it will be in friday and I will put it on. Does anybody know why the check engine oil level light will not go off? Do I have to take it to a dealer? Any help would be great

could just be the p.o.s gauge clusters these trucks have, my truck showed no oil pressure, put a new cluster in and it was fine, now this cluster is already having problems too

Ok changed the connector plug that goes into the oil pressur switch and it fixed the problem. The oil pressure is around 80 when I started it up. I have not driven it yet. Now that that is fixed the stupid check engine oil level light is still on. Could it be in the body control module? How can you get that warning light to go off? has anyone else had that problem or do you know how to fix it?

the same thing happened again. could this be the bcm? They are about $150 bucks. Could it be the harness? The gauge never went below 80 when I started it up It moved pretty fast back and forth and pegged out after 1 minute. Should i replace the cluster or have it checked out again. I dont know why the check engine oil level waring light will not go away. I am thinking that Lb7Kid is right about the bcm. Any thoughts?

You might want to consider adding a mechanical oil pressure gauge for safety's sake. Getting ready to add one to my 02. As these guys said these meters are crap. If I'm ever away from home and the oil pressure reads 0, I can check the mechanical oil pressure gauge to see if I really do have pressure or not. Just something to consider.
