What kind of BTU rating are you guys looking for in a cooler? I dug through the thread a little, and it seems some chose one close to or over 100k BTU which seems overkill by a long shot. Looking at Derale coolers (plate style) Summit has one listed being recommended for up to 30k GVW vehicles, but it's 25k BTU from what I can find (#15850).

I’d get the biggest one you can fit in the area you have available.

I ran a 67,000btu derale 40 stack plate.

I get that theory, and to just control the temp with the thermostat and fan, but am more or less looking for an appropriate size for moderate towing hp (around 400rwhp). I'm not one to oversize and overspend "because why not"

What kind of power were you trying to tow at with the twins?

in that case, there is alot of variables. how long you are staying at full power, outside temps, blah blah blah. you know the run down. Adam ran a cheaper version from jegs and was 400hp when he did the hot shotting with the truck. it would still get 260*. it took a second one to kept the temps under 240 IIRC.

i dont think you will find an "appropirate size" because theres just too many outside variables. just in how you drive is a big variable.

does it take you a long time to get high temps? whats the highest your seeing?if you want to tell us more on your driving habits and temp info, might be able to make an educated guess on size.

Well I'm not currently monitoring temps, so most of that is open ended. But when I do tow something it's rather light, like a disabled car. The only reason I started looking into aux coolers again was a conversation at work about some hotshot stuff like you mentioned.

In a perfect world I'd like to keep temps in check running WOT for a few minutes. I worked R&D for a while, and have seen what oils and engine parts can take at elevated temps, so 260°F coming out of the pan wouldn't scare me under this scenario

I'm running a decent size one from fluidyne, its the db-30616 single pass with there custom fan and shrowd. It's mounted up under the truck by the tcase like a few other guys on here. I wouldn't run a dual pass check out the dp/rating vs the singles. I think you would have a hard time buying/fitting something to big. Mine only pulls 10-11 degrees out of the oil when hauling heavy. I have 3 temp probes monitoring oil temp from the pan, after the air/oil cooler, and one going back into the oil galley (after oem LB7 water to oil cooler. Here is a link to fluidynes old catalog that showed what they are rated to pending air speed, also shows d/p rating for single vs dual pass. look at page 15-16.

Interesting that it only cooled it that much for you. What CFM was the fan? Looks like a great cooler by the specs I see in that book, even above 30k BTU at 10mph

I will get the p/n and try to look it up, fluidyne provided it. I ordered everything through them so I could get the shrowd and pick the fittings/location. I wish I would have thought to tell them to lower the NPT fittings on the bottom so more oil could be drained though when I service it. I'm sure I could probably find another fan that moves a little more air, I will look around for something.

Here is some calculations for the OEM oil pumps based off gear sizes, diameter, tooth count. This is for both LB7-LMM and the LML oil pumps.
Likely not perfectly accurate but should be pretty close.

This is the kicker, finding a high quality cooler that matches the higher RPM flow-rates with low pressure drop. I have @Chevy1925's old setup off of the Limo that's going to be installed on my LB7 BUT both of these trucks (Limo and mine) are running an exotic radiator solution, 2020 oil coolers, and the external oil cooler setup so it may not be an apples-to-apples comparison to everyone's trucks in terms of temperature deltas.

The LB7 cooler on my truck takes on average 20-30 degrees out of the oil temp, it actually does a really good job. I thought about the bigger OEM coolers but I just didn't want to put the extra load in the cooling system on my trucks already taxed cooling system. Been thinking about the cooler towing auxilary setup to help it out but the cost is up there. I think if I was going to do it again, I would bag the aux oil cooler stetup and spend the money on the larger OEM oil cooler and the cooler towing aux and primary radiator.

You’re going to want water pump gaskets too. I changed both out because they were actually both leaking. But I couldn’t imagine doing only the oil cooler in the truck without pulling the water pump.

Banks also is upcharging about $100-$150 over the dealer price of all the parts.

I've changed a bunch without touching the water pump, but I do agree not having the water pump in the way would make it a little easier to get the cooler out and back in. I just always felt like it would take me less time to fight with the hindrance than to remove and install the water pump.
