I really think its worse getting the tranny in and out of the truck.
I had to re-do my C3,4,and 5's after talking to MikeL, but it was only an extra couple of hours for that. AND, I'm a slow worker! I didnt have my steels indexed just right like they should be, and I didnt get the main shaft seated the first time. I took Mike's advice and made a jig to hold the main shaft in place when I flipped the tranny over and then it was a piece of cake. I guess final judgment will be wether it works or not... :eek:

:nopic::D Can we see it??

Its just a flat-iron and 3/8" allthread in the middle. There is a nut on the bottom side of the iron on the allthread that you cant see in the pictures also which is what you use to adjust the allthread length to hit the main shaft when the tranny is on the other side. I had the allthread protrude through the washer that is over the main shaft just enough to keep the allthread/washer from slipping off the shaft. If I was to do it again, It would be easier if I had some shorter bolts. I just used the same bolts that belong in the housing but had to use washers to keep the bolts from bottoming out. It makes it hard to keep the tranny sturdy with them bolts sticking out when you have it flipped over. I put 2x4's underneith on each side to fix it for me....

Todays lesson learned: Do not start the truck in N with the rear drive shaft in the transfer case but not hooked up to the rear diff! :eek:
It damn near knocked the truck off the stands.......:badidea:

God I hope not. It didnt seem to ding the end of the shaft very bad even. It left (2) 1/8-1/4" chips in the cement floor, but thats about it. I guess if I get a vibration going down the road I will know where it came from....

How did this all turn out? Did your self-rebuild last?

I went back and read this and you only have about half the story. About 600 miles after the rebuild I broke it good. My first boosted launch and it tied up between shifts 3-4 and I took out the splines on my c2 clutch hub and my P2 PLANETARY CARRIER SHAFT. Pretty damn pricey parts, and hard to come by too!
Ultimately I believe it was caused by me doing a boosted launch without my heavy acceleration "learned" into the tranny enough, and the fact I put the co-pilot on kill mode. Add in brand new clutches and all that caused a good tie-up.
The lutches and everything else looked as good as new, replaced the planetary and hub and did a few other MikeL :secret: stuff, ditched the co-pilot and its been going strong! Strong enough to twist off the U-joint on the driveshaft anyway!
I still think its harder to get the tranny in and out (without a lift) than it is to rebuild it. Especially with Mike just a phone call a way. I couldnt have done it without him for sure!

I got the same stitches on my right leg. It was 8 months before I was able to be 90% back in the game.

Good luck on the recovery.:D
