O2 Sensor question

Are all O2 sensors the same in function? The reason I ask is the 97 Lumina that I've been working on needs a new one. It has four wires and a black plug. I picked up a used on in a junkyard that has a grey plug and four wires (came off a 2003ish GM car). The plugs are the same configuration, except the one has an extra protrusion on the inside that prevents the black plug from working. Would the newer sensor work with the 97 PCM if I where to either modify the grey plug or swap the plugs?

there are differences in resistance and some have a heating element in them some are 2 wire some 3 and some 4 wire also.

Well, in this case, both are four wire. Is there a good way to tell if they are the same? What's the worst that could happen if I modified the plug to work? Fried ECM or just a DTC related to a "problem" o2 Sensor?

Edit: The "new" sensor is a Denso, markings as follows:

DENSO
