Novice Tuner Question

I'm sure asking what's best is like kicking any other hornet's nest, but here goes!

We just purchased a 2013 2500hd with 6.6 diesel. Truck has 81k miles on it. Most days, is driven around 50 miles round trip to and from work. Roughly 3-4 wells out of the year, we tow a 10k lb camper, often in the mountains.

I'm satisfied with performance/ acceleration; we're really interested in better fuel economy when commuting, and any improvements in towing when on vacation.

I did a little poking around, and there seems to be a consensus that EFILive is a great way to go. Two custom tunes that keep coming up are Kory Willis and Idaho Rob.

So, I went to DieselPowerProducts.com and asked the question of what they recommended. Answer came back EFILive Autotuner 11-16 LML Duramax by Kory Willis, $1,189, and that I should consider S&B Cold Air Intake @ $299.

I cruised over to the atptrucks.com site and asked the same question. Answer came back with the EFILive AutoCal package with three tunes specifically for me (towing, mileage, mild performance), for $689.

Am I missing something, or not asking the right questions? Does one tune really cost $500 more than the other? For what I'm wanting (primarily better mileage day to day), does changing out the air intake make sense?

Sorry for the really novice questions, and if the answer is more complicated than I'm making it to be. Is EFILive the right way to go for this? Noticed that atp has 'bundles' that include Edge Insight CTS2; is this something I need to be concerned about?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Chuck

I can't comment on the price gouging, but ATP will not steer you wrong. Rob has been doing great with his emissions intact tuning.

I would buy tuning that deletes the emissions stuff if it was my truck. That stuff causes nothing but problems once you get a few miles and years on it.

The difference is ATP doesn't do emissions delete tuning on LMLs. If you plan on leaving all that on go with ATP. If you plan on deleting everything then PPEI is one way to go. There are several others that are reputable tuners as well.

Check out rob's write up on his emissions compliant lml. As mentioned above if you want to be emissions compliant rob is your best bet probably. If not then there's a few more things you'll want to do before getting your truck tuned. Personally i'd remove everything emissions related and never look back, but also know your states emissions testing before doing so, or how to avoid it. I gained about 3 mpg with my current setup and I don't drive easy by any means.

Be careful answering first-time poster questions about deletes, guys. This particular newbie is on multiple sites asking the same question.

I apologize if there's a policy or etiquette regarding posting to multiple sites. I am vey new to this, and found three sites that all had reasonable conversations breakgoing about this topic. Seemed to make service to ask for as much input and information as I could to get myself up to speed on it. I really didn't mean to break any posting rules.

You need to understand that its not something that's talked about "out in the open" any more considering the large fines that companies have paid in the past when they openly advertised delete options.

While I do not speak for DD itself, I personally do not want this site be the conduit thru which a tuner or exhaust company gets a subpoena from our wonderful govt demanding $$, hence my skepticism and suspicion. We've already found two possible EPA people trolling here for delete info.
If a tuner wants to openly say he does them and risk the fines, then thats on him. I just dont think we should give out the info freely without their permission. Hope thats understandable.

Theres more than enough info out there already for you to make an informed decision. You just have to use the search function, both here and google. ;) Good luck to you.

For what it's worth, I didn't ask about delete options (honestly didn't even think about that). I'd like a little better mileage, and understand I can tow better. As to there being tons of information out there, that could be said for 50% of what's on these forums; a lot of it is opinion vs experience, but there's a lot of really good experience as well. I searched, and found two options that seemed reasonable. One was twice as much as the other, so I asked for feedback from those that seemed to know.

I'm really not sure what I did wrong, or what makes this worthy of "good luck, leave us alone".

Didnt say, "leave us alone". Tried to explain my position. That was all. If you take it differently than that, well....

I would go with ATP. Rob was done extensive research to fine tune his emissions-friendly tuning while still giving increased performance.

Sorry if I took it the wrong way. Just overwhelmed with the options, trying to weed through the recommendations. Thanks for the advice, I'll give Rob a call monday and see what his recommendations would be.

Dustin at ATP can give you a hand. Not sure if you can get Rob directly but I do know Dustin is on the forums and has been around for a while.

Honestly any good tuner from this site can give you what you're wanting. I have tuning from ridge runner on my truck and love it. It's all just who you decide to pick. You can't go wrong with any of the tuning from the vendors here. I know here's a ton of options. I picked ridge runner because it was closest to me and he's been at it one of the longest of anyone. But take your pick. Whatever you want done to your truck to reach the levels you're at, any of these guys can get you there

As far as posting on different forums. I've been there. Newbie mistakes. Sometimes there are people that pose as an owner to fish for info on who they can fine for deletes. And we don't want that here. We need all the help we can get from these guys and don't need a EPA guy taking one or more of them down. Granted. You weren't asking. But with some guys mentioning it. Coupled with the fact you posted on a few sites. Senior members get suspicious. You'll find all the info you'll ever need here in this forum. I'm tried others and none of them come close to the guys here.

Sounds like a sweet truck and wish you all the best in your tuning needs
