Not Your Common Rough Idle (04.5 LLY)

Hello all kind of new to this forum, hoping someone can help me out.

My truck is a 04.5 LLY/Alli CCSB. since the dy after i bought the truck its had somewhat a choppy or rough idle. From research first guess was filter head or FPR. While rebuilding the filter head i found the inlet was almost blocked off from what looked like sand. so new filter head, filter, hoses, & Carter lift pump was thrown on. Helped the truck dramatically, thought it was gone but nope. a few days later my head gaskets went. i also done a EGR delete when i did filter. so i hit up Creatures of the Night Performance and got a head gasket set with grade c's, ARP studs, and LML manifold. while i was in there i went ahead and threw in a new Bosch FPR from Alligator Performance and replaced all the other fuel lines too. again i thought it was fixed but wrong.

Truck runs awesome and balance rates all show awesome until she gets up to operating temps then balance rates show nothing. i have a snap on Solus pro im checking everything with. i thought the truck was at temp so i killed each injectors one by one. all injectors a big difference except number 7. so i ice picked #7 and started it back up. again thought everything was good til truck got to about 180° then came the choppy idle. so again i went to kill each injector and this time nothing changed when i killed any of them.

So now im lost and puzzled. i checked all the wiring while i was doing my head gaskets and everything looked good. i ended up replacing almost all the loom except for the plastic piece on the intake manifold. im just really stumped now and don't know where to turn. if anyone could chime in or help me run this problem down i would be forever grateful.

Also i forgot to mention, there no abnormal smoke anywhere in the power band. only on WOT and its all black i run a PPE Standard Xcelerator on the 90hp setting.

When it's choppy have you watched the rpms on your solus? Crank sensor might be on the way out. But if you say you had sand in the filter head you may want to pull your injectors out and send them off to be tested. The sand may have gotten to some of them.

RPM's jump around a bit like 650-720. Even if i idle the truck up to 1200RPM with the Solus it sounds good but almost like you can feel it miss a beat every other second or something. Running down the road sometime i think i can hear a fuel knock. Only other time it does anything is like cursing 70 when your really not giving it gas, 2-3 times now its had a dead miss. Like it missed a injection. But normally only happens once.

If it does start to make the knock sound as soon as i make boost the knock goes away.

I may try a crank sensor for giggles, that way i can check the reluctor wheel. I really don't wanna take it to the dealership if i don't have to. Ill try to get a video of the Solus later.

Sub'd. Had a buddy with the exact same problem and couldn't figure it out so he sold the truck.

Maybe you bought his friend's truck. :roflmao:

Anyway, I'd try shutting off injectors with the Solus again and see what it does. If none of them make any difference, there's got to be something wrong with your scan tool. Does it look at data and check codes and all that ok? I would suspect injector #7 has a problem if it did nothing when you shut it off. The ice pick fix is used to fix a problem with the injector connector, and I've never seen that not throw a code.

could be a bad FICM I have seen one go bad and it had an odd issue running at idle is there any way you can switch FICM's with someone and see if it cures it or put yours on theirs and see if there's runs like that?

Im trying ti find someone in SouthWest Virginia or East TN now that i can swap with. I took a few snap shots of the Solus. Injectors 3-4-5-6 keep going to 0 on CMD and my main fuel keeps jumping to the negative. Im list and worried. Also what does PCM in VTD Fail Yes mean?

The very first pic is with the engine cold.

So i went ahead and changed out the last FICM hose, all others even in the valley are new. Checked my lift pump, double clamped it and threw on my new CAT Fuel/Water Seperator. Again as soon ad the truck hits operating temp it starts jumping/loping. Again balance rates went to 0.0, but if i hold the brake it now shows the balance rates. But still none of them was +/- .03. Im just really puzzled right now

When i was putting everything back together last week front ny head gaskets and ARP's i completely went over the harness. A lot of the loom was bad but no broke or rubbed wires that i could find. Im almost ready to drop it off at a shop and let they say injectors, but i don't see injectors being bad with no smoke and the balance rates i have. Im lost

Maybe pull injectors out and have a good injector shop run them on the Bosch stand. I wouldn't be surprised if you had one acting strange. If you've checked all wiring and sensors and all is well then injector testing would be my next move.

Yes desired and actual are in the pics above, for the biggest part its dead on Maurice go +/- one for less than a spit second. It looks 100x better than it did before head gaskets and the new Bosch FPR.

Anyone know what the OE values should be to compare with? Im worried about fuel rate, after its warm it goes from 5-8mm3 to 0-1 or some times even negative.

Im afraid if i pony up for a set of injectors it won't be it. Im gonna try and get out and get a crank sensor and see what happens. Would love to find a FICM i could swap out just to see what happens. I just wish i could get a code or SES/CEL something to give me a clue to what's going on.

This is sounding more and more like the FICM to me. this is exactly what I ran into with another LLY. I would not buy a set of injectors till you rule the FICM out.

I just got a fuel temp sensor code, its reading 105°, i can only get balance rates now in Drive

My Solus also says a engine at operating temp should have a FPR of 35-45mpa mine only shows 30 when warm. But ACT & DES are exact

My Solus sat balance rates should read .3-.5ms at idle what could cause mine to be so high?
