hi all, Im Steve.. the unfortunate owner of a 2001 SIerra 2500 with a duramax.
last summer it died on my daughter, had it towed home, new batteries, no start..
found pass lock problems, maybe fixed.. this is what it does.. cranks long, fires up ONE SECOND, then nothing..
whats been done, rebuilt primer/fuel filter head, new lines front to rear, bypassed cooler because of fittings (temp) added a lift pump (electric) on frame rail for positive pressure.. tried starting, crank long, one second fire then nothing..
I am at a loss, truck has 100k on it. if i cant get it going, its going to scrap..
I have too much into it now, springs, trans-fuel-brake lines, new tires, new brakes, adapter for allison ....HELP
scg13803@yahoo(dotcom) gets me...

You'll need to get a good scan tool and watch the rail pressure while cranking to diagnose the long cranking.

The start then die after 1 second is indicative of a continuing PassLock problem. That can also be verified with a scan tool. If you are willing to pay someone, the PassLock system can be disabled in the ECU to eliminate that as a variable.

However, it could all come down to a fuel system problem, such as high return rate from injectors or failing CP3.

Where are you located? Might be a member in your area willing to help out, or at least we could suggest a good shop.

ok guys I want to thank all of you chiming in..
I suspect its pass-lock, my brother in FLA brought his skanner and confirmed this, and we tried a number of things to get by it.. so this is an unknown as he returned south..
I am in upstate NY close to SYRACUSE on the eastern finger lake OTISCO..
i suspect this is either pass lock.. or as some said bypass in injectors, funny this happened all at once.
it died on my daughter (bad batteries) then pass lock..(thanksGM!) and now after replacing every line and filter housing and pressure regulator down in the V.. still got squat.. is there a way to just bypass all this electronic crap and get it running?
My Deutz tractor..(60yrs old) has never had problems and it has done everything.startes everytime..and its pure mechanical...

A Duramax is as far from a Deutz as you are from California.

You can bypass PassLock with an EFILive tune. However, there is a free alternative, and that is to do the PassLock relearn procedure.

The short version:

  1. Put the truck on a battery charger. Wait for batteries to be fully charged.
  2. Get in, start truck, let it die (leave key in run position!)
  3. Wait at least 10 minutes, security light will go out
  4. Turn the key off for 5 seconds (leave it in the ignition)
  5. Restart the truck (2nd start), let it die, leave key in run
  6. Wait at least 10 minutes, security light will go out again
  7. Turn the key off for 5 seconds (leave it in the ignition)
  8. Restart the truck (3rd start), let it die again, leave key in run
  9. Wait at least 10 minutes, security light will go out again
  10. Turn the key off for 5 seconds (leave it in the ignition)
  11. Restart the truck (4th start), it should now stay running and the security light should go out right after starting.
The procedure takes about 30 minutes, but doesn't require a scan tool. If you have a scan tool, you can force the relearn instantly. I strongly recommend hooking the truck to a battery charger before doing the relearn, as weak batteries can cause the ECU to reset during cranking, and you'll never complete the procedure.
