My son just bought his first duramax. It's a 2001 2500 hd automatic 4x4. Just got it out of shop having put a new transfer case in. Now we are looking to do motor upgrades. Looking at 6-700 horse but don't know where to start. Stock motor with 220 thousand on it as we /he is on a highschool budget we don't want to waste money on unnecessary parts. Any help or advice would be great. Thanks in advance and look forward to learning from people that know what they are talking about.

6-700HP will require a built transmission, along with several upgrades that aren't really high school budget friendly

I would say get stock trans safe EFI from a reputable tuner, throw an exhaust and an intake on it (kids love those) and be happy till you have more budget

I can tell you right now that you will be about 12-15k in parts (not including any labor for thing you can't do) to get mid 600's and pushing a 220k motor and a high school kid pushing it. Get ready for motor work. 600-650 even with dead on tuning could still kill a motor, hell 550 can kill one too.
