I have a 2003 crew cab h/d 2500 d-max. The other day I went to start the truck and it just turned over, nothing else. The night before there was no indication of trouble, I had it towed and it is in the shop. They have pulled all the codes and replaced the crank sensor, still no fix, now they think it might be the ecm. Is this something anyone else has heard of? The truck has only 86,000 miles and always taken care of, I am at my wits end.

Does the exhaust smell like fuel?

Not much info. What were the codes, did they check rail pressure?

Our crank sensors seldom go out.

I have a feeling the dealer you are at doesn't know Dmaxes very well.

Could be air in the fuel, or the ecm lost it's programming. Henry has had this happen a few times.
Would be interesting to see what codes if any are coming up, and the basic tests like fuel pressure and battery voltage at the ecm/FICM.

Sorry if it is in the wrong place, I am new to the site, it does have a "Quadzilla" programmer. Would that make the ECM loose its place or memory? Thanks for all the ideas so far, the mechanic that is working on it is very knowledgable. There are only a few Chevrolet dealerships in the area that will work on Dmax and the waiting list is usually long.

Unload the Quad (return to stock), have dealership reflash the truck with Tech 2 (use the NEW ECM procedure, not update calibration). Give it a shot.

Does the exhaust smell like fuel? This tells us that the injectors are firing.

The exhaust indeed smells like fuel, I returned everything back to stock and will take the truck to another shop (dealership) to have the ECM flashed again. After speaking to the dealership (that I purchased the truck from) they used to be a Quadzilla dealer, but have had multiple issues with them, they no longer are due to the high rate of returns. I hope that they can reflash with Tec 2 as you suggest and I doubt I use the programmer again. Has anyone else had trouble with a Quadzilla programmer?

All is well and good

Just wanted to first thank everyone for all thier suggstions in my original posts regarding starting trouble. The trouble wound up being contacts on one of the big couplers were not maing contact. About 15 minutes on the diagnostic and simple repairs and I was on my way. I do have another simple question, to change the fuel filter, does the filter canister spin off and after changing do you prime it by pushing the top of the unit? Sorry to be asking rather simple questions but have only recently started working on diesels myself. Thank you.......

yes take the passenger side fender liner out, spin the filter off, install a new one.

To prime open bleed screw. prime button on top until a good solid flow of fuel comes out the bleed screw with few air bubbles. reinstall bleed screw and pump until the pump gets firm. Start truck.
