new s366 makes noise on shutdown

When I shut the truck off you can hear a scratchy type sound as the turbo spins down. It's not steady, on and off. Light sound... and it must not be rubbing hard because the turbo spins down for a good 15-20 seconds.

I pulled the intake and hood stack pipe and looked, no visible rubbing. Must be deeper inside. It sounds exactly like they sound when you have the exhaust housing off, and spin it by hand, and it rubs on that little tin heat shield that is between the exhaust wheel and the center section because it't not being pinched down tight and can rub a little....

It's a "tinny" type sound. Not loud, just enough to can hear it (probably can hear it because the exhaust is like a foot long.

Turbo has almost no up and down play. Does have a tiny bit of it and out.. not much! It has less in and out, than it does up and down. Turbo only has a couple hundred miles. It's working fine from a performance standpoint, spools quick, makes good boost etc. Can't find anything wrong otherwise...

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this type of thing with a Borg Warner turbo...?? any thoughts?? thanks guys this has me worried but maybe it's normal?

There should not be any in and out play. Its easy to pull apart and inspect. Rebuild kits are fairly cheap at $150.00.

Turbo is brand new... has 4-500 miles on it. I'm not rebuilding it. Doesn't there have to be a little in and out play? (Has to be room for oil right?) or is it so little it shouldn't be noticeable? thanks for the help

My s475 has always had a tiny bit of in and out as well as some up and down but there is more up an down

Thanks for the call Trent! I'll get back to you with what I find.

All I did was buy the turbo through Trent and he's taking the time to help me figure out what's going on / get it taken care of :hug:

did you pull the piping off and then retighten the housings? It happened to me once and I had to do this because the housing was just a tiny bit cocked and did the same thing as youre saying.

Not yet.. when I get home I'm going to pull it apart and see where it's rubbing, although Trent and I both feel it's hitting that heat shield.

But I could always give that a try, put it all back together and see if maybe it just wasn't seated perfectly straight and square, or not tight enough (assuming nothing has been damaged yet - I don't think anything has). I checked two bolts on it last night, and they were good and tight.. but going back through everything can't be a bad idea.

Their may be some in and out play when the engine is off... With no oil pressure..

There should none feelable by hand, up and down is ok to a point though. my 475 has 0 in and out that is feelable without sticking a dial indicator on it

Mine has less in and out than up and down (and it feels like new up and down), but you can easily feel it. It actually makes a click as you move it in and out and it stops each way.

i dont think it should be doin that but run through what trent wants ya to do and talk with him. im sure he will take care of you

Yea I'm going to tear the center section out tonight and see where its rubbing and go from there. Just going to be a bummer to have the truck down for 1-2 weeks when a brand new turbo is the problem :( Could be worse though...

I'm also going to move the oil feed line to the front passenger side oil galley (already ordered the right fitting for this, and I''l make up a new line). Just to make sure it's getting proper oil from now on as Trent suggested.

on the bright side, its a great thing you made it such easy access to get the turbo off :D

Bad news is that I put a dial indicator on the wheels, the turbo has 11 thou of axial in and out movement :( I believe I read that 4 thou is the max allowed. Not sure on that, but either way that seems like a lot of movement :(

sounds like the thrust bearing might be worn, do you hear the turbo surge/bark very often? like when someone is under high boost and lets off the throttle rapidly you hear that goofy air studdering sound?

Just like i said in the PM , seems to loose to me and def needs to come back . It sucks for sure all the way around but well take care of you on it , well change the feed from the stock location to the oil galley just in case , and well get the turbo fixed up and back to you ASAP .
