I have a bulit trans in the truck for about 2 years. I've put less than 30k miles on it. Took it out today and it started getting hot. In the past it has not been above 150* roughly (using the factory dash gauge). Today it climbed to over 200* going down the highway and still climbing. I pulled over and let it cool down. The lines directly out of the trans were hot untill they make the 90* headed towards the cooler. The cooler was ice coold as well as both lines. Ambient temp was around 40*. First time this trans has ever seen any heat like that since the trans was built by a shop in Oregon.Once I got home, I pulled the left line on the cooler. There was a bunch of material in the fluid. I didn't get much fluid from it. I pulled the right line off the cooler and didn't get any fluid. I took a mirror and looked up inside the cooler and found nothing preventing flow in either side. I thought about taking the cooler off and have it flushed to see if it is plugged. The truck does sit for weeks and sometimes months at a time, outside but under cover. I concerned about the amount of material in the fluid. If the cooler isn't plugged I was going to change both filters and refill the trans. Maybe one of the filters is plugged up or restricting flow. The trans was shifting fine in all forward gears and reverse, just getting hot. It was built by a reputable shop in Oregon. Like I said, I've never had an issue with it untill today. I could smell oil when we came to stop lights. Didn't see any oil leaking from the vent tube on top. I did not climb up in there to see if any had actually came out. I didn't see any down on the trans. I did a stall test and I couldn't get the truck to rev higher than 1,000-1,200 without wanting to push through the brakes.
