I forget where I saw it here, but someone posted that you should use special "break-in" oil nowadays. Sorry, dont know much more about it.

Not really nessacary on a roller cam but on a flat tappet cam a breakin lube is very important because the oil companys had to remove all zinc from the oil thanks to the epa. All reputable cam manufactures offer some sort of a special cam and lifter break in lube for their flat tappet style camshafts that has the zinc or something similar for a thoruogh break in.

x2,

no special break in on a roller cam.

I have swapped many lifters and cams on the 96-00 vortec engines without issues,

I acutally have old lifters with a new cam in my suburban

Just do them all,

Are you going with GM lifters or aftermarket?

I've got a full set of SPEED-PRO's at the house, and I wouldn't use them even in an emergency. COMP CAMS makes a good aftermarket lifter for about the same cost as the ones you'll get at most auto parts stores. MELLINGS also makes a good lifter, but FEDERAL MOGUL's SUCK bad.

Well i bought federal mogul sealed power at oreillys so i guess im going to the dealer monday.

I went through 2 sets of them in a truck before trying to get a set that didn't rattle on start-up. Finally bought a set of COMP CAMS from SUMMIT and it's been good to go for 3 years now with no problems.

I know I may have a different opinion but I have also built a few. Always use moly/break in lube when installing new/used/old whatever condition lifters into a a used system. They just help the two metals adjust to each other without scoring. you can usually get it from someone who has recently ordered a camshaft. it comes in a small packet with new cams or you can get it from jegs. Its cheap insurance. I just finished pulling out a 472 Hemi crate engine with 764 miles on it with a flat cam for this very issue. It set for a few years and all the prelube ran off and all they did was spin the oil pump for priming and fired it, no EOS or lube on anything. Now its off to Hensley performance for a complete rebuild:(.

remember we are talking roller,

x2 on the speed pros.

Ive had handfulls that make noise and some work well, but Comp makes some of the best cam/lifters out there at the moment
