Hope this is in the right place.
I have a 2001 2500 Crew with an LB7. New transfer case a couple years ago, various fixes. Overall its solid. Has about 300,000.
It has burned a little coolant since I got. Had the local Diesel guy work on other issues a few times and put a camera down and he thinks there's a small crack letting it leak in. Anyways it still ran well so I used some Kseal despite the debate on using sealants and it really helped the coolant loss and I don't think that's my main issue.
But it seems to get more tired a;; the time. Now it blows white smoke a lot. This is not coolant. My balance rates on one injector are sometimes 6 or more apart from others. When I idle at a stoplight and then take off, there's a cloud of white smoke. When I get on it hard there's some black Smoke. I ran some Diesel extreme hoping to clean things up, but it's only getting worse. Most the time it still runs just fine, but once it awhile it will start running really rough with lots of black smoke than return to normal.
Long and short, it seems i need an injector job. Here's my conundrum...
I have a 300k engine. Mechanic says full injector job will run me around 4k (I can;'t believe how much these things costs to repair) But then there's still that crack and the coolant leak. Do I really want to fix the injectors without replacing that stuff? Now we're up in the range of 7K or so and I still have an engine with 300 thousand.
So the next step is just to get a re-manufactured engine. Now I'll looking at 7-8K plus install putting me at 10-11K installed. So I have this tiered pricing where it seems to make sense to put a new engine, but now I'm spending 10K on an 01 pickup that's pretty nice, but still an 01.
This is my first Diesel and while I love how it tows my RV (that's it's main job), it sure has not saved me money overall. And yet I don't want to give up towing with a Diesel.
So what do you think. Where should I go. Is it worth a new engine, are their other alternatives. What's next?
