Need help with the wife's car

A few weeks back, the wife's Envoy Check Eng light came on. Had it checked at Auto Zone and said it due to low vacuum somewhere in the fuel system. They recommended to change the gas cap to see if that corrected the issue. 6 or 7 days later the Check Eng light came on again. Today I took the Envoy to a local mechanic to see if they could find the problem . . . and they did. Apparently the fuel tank is cracked where the filler neck of the gas tank meets the body of the gas tank. He said I could try to use JB Weld or something similar but the gas vapors would eventually eat away at it and I would have to do it again. He recommended, since this is a safety issue, I should replace the gas tank (which I agree). However, it would cost around $1200 (which I don't agree). They said they could only get a new tank from the dealer.

So I was hoping to get a few ideas from you guys as far as if there is an epoxy you have used around gas that has held up for some time or where to look for a gas tank other than the stealership. I am going to check GM Parts Direct and Rock Auto. Other places?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a recall for this on certain models. Call your dealer and give them your vin and see if it applies to you.

So far from what I have read, the recall is for the 02 and 03 models. Ours is an 04. The shop I took it to called the local dealership to check the price on a new one, gave them my VIN number, but the dealership never said anything about a recall. I may give the dealer a call myself and check it out just to be sure.

<HR><A href="http://gsi.xw.gm.com/newsi/showDoc.do?docSyskey=2005993&from=bcpi#N65563">Condition

Some customers of 2002-2004 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL, and 2004 GMC Envoy XUV vehicles may comment on an SES light illumination, which may be accompanied by a fuel odor, and/or a few drops of fuel on the ground when refueling the vehicle. This may be caused by a fracture of a weld on the fuel tank inlet check valve (ICV). The ICV is located above the full fuel level. A fracture in this area may allow fuel vapors to pass through and allow droplets of fuel to accumulate on the side of the fuel tank as it passes over the fracture during refueling.
<A href="http://gsi.xw.gm.com/newsi/showDoc.do?docSyskey=2005993&from=bcpi#N65572">Special Coverage Adjustment

This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.
For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after June 8, 2007, are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to June 8, 2007, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.

Customer Reimbursement – For US

All customer requests for reimbursement for previous repairs for the special coverage condition will be handled by the Customer Assistance Center, not by dealers.
A General Motors Customer Reimbursement Procedure and Claim Form is included with the customer letter.
Important: Refer to the GM Service Policies and Procedures Manual, section 6.1.12, for specific procedures regarding customer reimbursement and the form.
<A href="http://gsi.xw.gm.com/newsi/showDoc.do?docSyskey=2005993&from=bcpi#N66780">Customer Reimbursement – For Canada and Export

Customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs to correct the condition described in this bulletin are to be submitted to the dealer prior to or by June 30, 2008. Repairs must have occurred within the 10 years of the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, or 240,000 km, whichever occurs first.
When a customer requests reimbursement, they must provide the following:

June 2007
Dear General Motors Customer:
As the owner of a 2002, 2003, or 2004 model year Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT or GMC Envoy XL, or 2004 model year GMC Envoy XUV, your satisfaction with our product is very important to us.
This letter is intended to make you aware that some 2002, 2003, and 2004 model year Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL, and 2004 model year GMC Envoy XUV vehicles may have a condition where the Service Engine Soon (SES) light may illuminate, which may be accompanied with a fuel odor, and/or a few drops of fuel may fall on the ground when refueling the vehicle. This may be caused by a fracture of a weld on the fuel tank inlet check valve (ICV). The fuel tank ICV is located above the full fuel level. A fracture in this area may allow fuel vapors to pass through and allow droplets of fuel to accumulate on the side of the fuel tank as it passes over the fracture during refueling.
SES light activation does not necessarily indicate a condition due to the fuel tank ICV fracture. Except when SES light activation is accompanied by the additional conditions mentioned (i.e., fuel odor and/or a few drops of fuel on the ground during refueling), please consult your Owner’s Manual.
Do not take your vehicle to your GM dealer as a result of this letter unless you believe that your vehicle has the condition as described above.
What We Have Done: General Motors is providing owners with additional protection for the fuel tank ICV. If this condition occurs on your 2002, 2003, or 2004 model year Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT or GMC Envoy XL, or 2004 model year GMC Envoy XUV within 10 years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 150,000 miles (240,000 km), whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge.
What You Should Do: Repairs and adjustments qualifying under this special coverage must be performed by a General Motors dealer. You may want to call the service department at your dealer to find out how long they will need to have your vehicle so that you may schedule the appointment at a time that is convenient for you. This will also allow your dealer to order parts if they are not already in stock. Keep this letter with your other important glove box literature for future reference.
Reimbursement: The enclosed form explains what reimbursement is available and how to request reimbursement if you have paid for repairs for the special coverage condition.
If you have any questions or need any assistance, just contact your dealer or the appropriate Customer Assistance Center between the hours of 8:00 AM and 11:00 PM, EST, Monday through Friday. They can be reached at the number listed below.

Looks like it only covers the long wheelbase models. Check to see if your vin is in the breakpoints in this recall.

And it is a special policy so its only active for 10 years or 150000 miles whichever comes first.

Thank you , thank you, thank you. I will call the dealer tomorrow. Right now we are at 107K so I should be able to get this taken care of (I hope).

So if you don't mind me asking, how did you know there was a recall for this?

Hold up, just checked the VIN numbers that are covered. Ours falls outside the covered VINs. Ours is 46123675. Any ideas how I could still get the dealership to cover this under warranty?

If you have done a lot of business with the dealer, they may "good will" it for you. If not, you will have to call gm and cross your fingers.

You could have still gotten one of the faulty tanks, esp with your VIN so close to the cutoff. They may have just estimated where the cutoff fell. It'd still be worth your while to call GM c/s and push it with them. Good luck.

Thanks! I'm going to try to call them in the morning. My guess is the dealership won't do anything unless they have some approval from GM to do the work. I'll let you know what I find out.

Just got off the phone with a GMC rep and she said even if our vehicle is outside the VIN breakpoints, GM would still cover it under warranty as long as a dealership confirms the problem with the gas tank matches this service bulletin. Thanks again for the help!

Wow! You must have a huge kitchen if your wife needs a car!

Seriously, as a sidebar I've used Devon/JB Weld on fuel components with excellent results up to 250°F

See? If you dont try, you'd never know. GM doesnt want another "truck-exploding" problem. Glad they are going to take care of it.

My moms had this problem right after we got it and it is an 03. There was not a recall then and we paid out of pocket to have it fixed. When the recall came out we were reimbursed for the amount of the repair. Hers was cracked right at the filler neck

Well, I took the wife's Envoy in this past week for the dealer to check the tank. They confirmed that the tank was broken and matched the service bulletin. The service manager scared me a little as he said he could not use the service bulletin code to cover it under the warranty. However, he said if the GM rep told me it would be, he would find a way to make it happen. Next day, dealership called and said the car was ready and would be covered under the warranty. Only request was I give them good remarks on the customer service survey, to which I said no problem. So again a big thank you to Js95gt for posting that service bulletin.
