Im tired so Ill make this somewhat quick.
Ive had a video interface installed/integrated into my factory nav unit for a couple years with my backup camera hooked up to it. But it also has a separate input for a DVD player, etc... Up until now Ive had nothing to hook up to it because I was too cheap to buy a DVD player.
Well I found a cheap DVD player on ebay. Its freakin awesome. Plays basically every multimedia format to ever grace a computer (divx, avi, mpeg, wmv, wma, mp3, jpeg pics, etc) in addition to the obvious video DVD's. It also has both a USB input for a flash drive, and an SD card slot so you can put a bunch of divx movies onto a flash drive or SD card. Finally, it has an additional auxiliary input. It has an IR sensor on the front AND an external IR sensor input on the back so you can mount the DVD player out of sight and still use the remote if you so desire. Oh and did I mention the thing is like 100 bucks shipped?
made in china obviously and the instructions were quite amusing because they were translated so poorly, but it has a 1 year warranty.
I thought about under the seat but in the winter it would get mud and crap on it, then in the glovebox but then I wouldnt be able to fit the owners manual, which I need in case theres something on my truck I need help figuring out. :joker:
By some bit of luck it just so happend that the space between the factory CD changer and the ashtry on a Denali console, there is enough space to mount the DVD player. And its the same width and similar looking to the factory CDX so In my own opinion, it looks quite nice there and fits well. The audio input to the stereo is handled with my USA Spec PA-11GM ipod adapter. It has a standard RCA aux audio input in addition to its dedicated ipod input. So I have... FM, AM, XM, CD, DVD, and ipod all integrated just like a factory setup.
I had to do a lot of hacking and take the console apart to get it to fit, but now its mounted snugly and I have all the wiring hooked up. When I first turned it on, the picture was all screwed up and jumping around so much you could barely even see what the picture was...I was so mad because I was driving out to wisconsin the next day to visit a friend and I wanted to be able to pull over and watch a movie if I got tired. I was about ready to rip it out send it back when I figured id mess around in the "setup" menu. Then I was barely able to make out "TV: PAL". DUH. Some bonehead at the factory forgot to set to NTSC. I switched it and then it worked fine. The picture on the nav screen is awesome and the sound is like a movie theater with the lux amp and aftermarket sub.
oh and I also installed some auxillary audio/video plugs on the console next to the 12v outlet, so I can plug in my laptop and put efilive on the nav unit, or any other composite video source.
anyway, here are some pics. The movie I happend to have in the player when I took the pics is old (NO, its not that god awful lindsay lohan joke of a herbie movie), on new movies the picture looks 10x better. Dont mind the junk in my cupholders or the peeling paint on the ashtry door, all the denali consoles do it...
