My truck was in the shop from Dec. 12th until yesterday morning. The initial holdup was holidays and then the shop had issues with paint matching (ended up painting over 50% of the truck when only the bumper cover and hood were damaged).
Anyways after driving small cars for what seemed like forever I finally was able to pick up my truck yesterday morning. Shop owner told me that they had to clear a check engine light due to a MAF sensor code. Apparently they disconnected it when they removed the airbox (new core support) and cycled the ignition setting the code. They cleared the code and then I left the shop (I did not see the scan tool but the tech said "low voltage code").
I drove several miles of 35MPH zones with Zero issues and then started to get on the highway. As I started to merge and hit the throttle the Motor started to sound like it was a tin can filled with marbles, a cloud of black smoke behind me, EGT's pegged, and Check Engine Light. I pulled over and set my hazzards and pulled off the highway and although it ran smooth with no smoke, it sounded funny even at idle and low speeds. I called them and had it towed on a flatbed.
Just my luck.......
Any chance any damage was done (it sounded TERRIBLE). I did not have a way to check codes at the time, but I assume it was the MAF sensor again and due to it reading incorrectly called for more fuel than it needed.
The only good news I had this week is we tore my gasser engine apart and found that I blew out every cylinder in the head gasket and blew a chunk of it into the lifter valley on cylinder 3. The rest of the engine and bearings were perfect. Checked the oil pump, installed new gaskets/seals and it's all set to go back in. Before I had the adjustable timing advance I had severe detonation and we feel that was the reason for the head gasket failure. No hard parts failed so that is always a good thing.
