Hey guys, is it possible to modify a stock VGT from an LBZ? I had a guy say he ported and polished the intake vain and put a different turbine wheel in his.. Is this even possible?

Ive never heard any of the pros here say much about the VGT's and sure aint heard noone say anything like this..

Is this possible? or does it even help anything?

Thanks!

You can port the compressor cover, but it really doesn't do much if anything. There also are no "vanes" on the compressor side, only on the turbine side. I know there was talk that someone was developing new vanes for the stock unit. Fingers??? And yes the compressor wheel can be changed....Thats what cheetah turbos are. You also need to bore the cover out for the larger wheel or make a new cover. So sure it can be done.....but not something a shadetree mechanic does on kitchen counter:rofl::D

As others have pointed out Fleece and Danville offer different wheel combinations. I on the other hand have a stock VVT (housing/wheels) with non-OEM vanes. So, yes, it is possible.

Minisub's vanes suffer from laggy spool-up. Big Angry's are significantly better. I am now running a set that spools like it should, but the compromise has been more back-pressure than my original design. :( Less pressure than stock, but still up there. For instance, a WOT run producing 30 PSI of boost has drive pressures from 35-37 PSI depending on RPM. This compares to stock being 40+ and the original design being 33-34 PSI back pressure.

assuming objectivity, please state how the vehicles has benefitted.

Can't say. Don't have any hard data and the SOTP meter says both good and bad.

Since the original question was could a stock turbo be modified, figured it was relevant to chime in that it is possible...;)

Could this story be about a VGT not a VVT?

VVT= Variable Vain Turbo?..... Obvously variable vains....GM

VNT= Variable Nozzle Turbo? ..... Variable exhaust turbine housing change.....Ford 6.0L?

Advanced if I recall...

PS the Ford 6.0L uses the same turbo for all practical purposes... the vane pos sensor isn't used and the drain is different but everything else is about the same... The vanes are the same as the LLY.
