First, Love You Kat!

Kat got me a meteorite for Christmas. It's an Iron-Nickel type from the Campo del Cielo debris field in Argentina.

It weighs 956 grams (just over 2 pounds for those in Rio Linda), and is about the size of a baseball. The first thing you notice is how much heavier it is than a rock.

Meteorites are almost always magnetic (but not magnetized) even when they are just normal looking stones. There are both iron and stone types, and they are found by using a magnetic.

Attached are a couple pictures:

AFAIK that was not an inexpensive gift! Are you going to have it cut?

Yep, you don't want to use it to throw at the neighbor's dog when they are barking too much.

No cutting for this one, it's pretty cool looking as it sits.

If I get a "stone type" in the future, I will have it cut.

You can still get some meteorites that were originally from the Moon and Mars. Those ones are worth big dollars, or very small.
