Hey guys, in the midst of repairing my leaky head gasket, just got the heads off tonight and am going to drop them off at the machinist this week. Do I need to take the valve springs out before I take them in? Thanks.

No. But take 4 injectors, hold downs and bolts.

i take all the studs out (2 on the intake runner side, 2 on the exhaust manifold side, 2 on the coolant crossover pipe side) and the dowels out (rocker shaft dowels, head gasket dowels if they are still in the head, valve cover dowels, ect)

Thanks guys, glad I asked I wouldn't have thought of most of these. Dropping the heads off tomorrow!

Just out of curiosity, why take the injectors and hold downs? Is it so they can pressure test?

No just take them out and put them somewhere safe free of any particulates they don't need them and will have to take them out to surface the heads.

Oh got ya! Thanks for clarifying, all injectors are out, new ones going in when I put it back together. Same with the glow plugs.

Correct. Most machine shops need them to pressure check the heads.

Not all shops need the injectors to pressure test. I've used two shops, and neither required I provide injectors. I presume they either have a jig to hold the cups in, or they have a set of injector cores they use for the purpose.

IMO, if your machine shop can't figure out how to keep the cups in without the injectors, you want them nowhere near your heads, let alone injectors.

Makes sense. The cups stayed in the head and I didn't rremove those. That should be adequate yeah? I figured I'll ask him too beforehand if he needs them or not, coincidentally he was working on another set of duramax heads when I first went in, should've asked him all these questions, d'oh!
