While we're all in here, I got a super noob question.
What exactly do you have the machine shop check when replacing head gaskets? Or what do you tell them you want done. Never had to deal with a machine shop before in my life..

Tell them your doing head gaskets and to check/ machine the flatness of the gasket surface, check for cracks etc.. Most machine shops have a standard procedure for head resurfacing.

Is it worth the effort to machine a head when doing head gaskets on a motor that didn't blow a head gasket?

its always worth it to have them checked.

9/10 times stock duramax heads need the valve guides done. the stock ones wear out quickly. unless its a low mile engine, id plan for them to come back saying that.

Generally they check for leaks out the valve head sealing area as well as cracks in the head when pressure testing, then check the cyl side for warpage, then check the guides for wear and finally, for any other issues.

Mine needed valves, guides, seals, and decked at 90k miles. Valves looked like someone took a blow torch to them, but I'm pretty sure someone who stole one of these trucks wouldn't run it as hard as I did that one the first 70k miles I had it.
