I've got a customer that put a lly on a 21 ft air boat. They say it idles to high an has a vibration throug the prop. How low can this thing be idled down before it causes problems?

Fix the vibration.... fix the current problem first before possibly creating another one... :)

I agree. But they say it only vibrates at idle. I think They took a snapon scan tool an moved the idle up an down. The vibration disappeared. So now they want to tune it to turn the idle down.

My LB7 is set to idle at 600, and it idles fine all the way down to 525 or so. Below that it gets touchy and wants to surge on matter what I did. It takes a bit of work to prevent it from surging when returning to idle below 575, but it can be done. On the street, anything lower than 600 just didn't feel right driving it, but on a boat you could probably go lower.

I assume the LLY can idle similarly, if not lower.

Yea hot at idle is 14 psi. I've had 2 or 3 lmms in there lately with low oil psi warnings. I jus want to have a good number before I start. He wants 550 but I want some other opinions!

I would worry about low oil pressure moreso than anythting. Min is 14psi IIRC.

x2. 680rpm is plenty low enough for me....any lower than that and oil pressure starts to become a question....especially in an application thats under a big load such as a boat...where oil temps im sure get sky high

See how low you have to go to just kill the vibration and go from there. You may only have to drop it to 700 or so

I set mine to idle a little lower than stock.... can't remember off the top of my head.. maybe 50 rpms lower? it idles fine there, hopefully it won't take much to get what he wants....

I've never seen any oil pressure issues with mine at 600 RPM, even testing down to 525. Always stayed above 15, if just. But it is only 17 at 680 to begin with.
I run Delo 400 15W-40. I've heard running synthetic can cause lower pressures, and that the LMM sees lower pressures than the older models. Maybe that is why mine stays high enough?

Mines set at 600 which is where GM put the 01's at, and I hold a solid 30-35 at a hot idle. I did find though that I got a NASTY resonant vibration in mine at 640-650, set it above or below I was fine, but 650 would shake me to pieces. It's wierd though because I set one up for a guy with a built engine and 45 over sticks and his at 650 was smoother than at 680 or 600. Your probably just going to have to play with it some and find where it is the smoothest at. Another thing to think about is it a belt or gear reduction? And if it is a gear, what brand? Some people even with gas engines get a nasty resonant vibration at idle with the PANTHER built gear reduction, and the early KWAY ones with straight cut gears would actually chatter at an idle if you didn't use the right oil in them(300 weight gear oil I believe it was).

Or you could move the idle up. My LMM with twins vibrates at factory idle, but move it up 50 rpm and it does not, there is probably a lower RPM too, but I never tried it. The whole harmonic vibration thing can be really wierd. If you've ever been in a commercial airliner when they start the engines there are spots where the cabin vibrates like hell during spool up to normal RPM.

Not a scientist or anything. So maybe that's all wrong.

I have mine set to 735 till it gets to 219*, then it is set at 750. I find it cools down faster. The main reason I did it is to quiet down the gear slap in the ZF6.

He also wants it lower to slow prop speed for fishing? I've never been bow fishing but I guess they idle around an fish some? I'm gunna check it out tomorrow morning an see what all the readings go to. Thanks for all the comments!
