Just thought this was wierd , about this time a year ago a message popped up saying low coolant . The tank looked a bit low so it took half a gallon to get it level with the grates in the tank . It's been a whole year and it hasn't happened again.. I towed my jeep all the way to Kentucky and back hitting hills and it stayed cool ( 210) . No hard hose no wetness on pump weep hole . The egr has a blocker Plate on it . Just not sure what the heck happend for coolant loss.

What year truck? I have had several LB7 motors develop a pinhole in the aluminum line feeding the heater core, and it drips on the exhaust, leaving no evidence. Also some of the turbo lines can get a pinhole, same deal, no evidence.

Odds are you have one of those super slow leaks, and that is why it hasn't hit the low coolant light again. You can either ignore it, or get a pressure tester to find it and fix it. My brother's truck weeped for 2-3 years, and we finally fixed it when we sold it.

Did you put dye in the system to find it easier or just pressure it up and start searching until you found it? Reason I ask is this also happens on my lbz and I haven't really tried to solve it, I just top it off about once and year and carry on.

We just pressured it up and tried to find it. The advantage of the coolant test kit is you pressurize it when the motor is cold, so nothing evaporates. Makes finding the leaks WAY easier. Plus you can feel around where you can't see without burning yourself, and feel for the liquid.

I go up to 20 PSI to find the leaks. Sometimes they don't show up at all until 15 PSI, and even then just barely.

it is water and it does evaporate if the cap goes bad.

it shouldnt be taking a whole year for you to check the coolant level. it should be done on much more regular intervals

This could explain why the top of my engine looks wet , but there's also soot on top the engine ( not sure how that ends up there )

Are you sure the soot isn't just oil drips from the pcv and dust sticking to it?

I check it roughly every 2 weeks but I just don't top it off until I feel it's low enough.

Is there any benefit of completely deleting my egr vs the 10 dollar blocker plate other then the delete is more aesthetically pleasing ? Lol

No benefit other than aesthetics, and it being a bit easier to get to things on top of the motor once the EGR cooler is out of the way. I personally recommend the blocker plate, so much easier than removing everything.

I had low coolant level message on dash messaging. Adjusted level and still occurs. I took it to several technicians with the unwanted diagnosis, leaking head gasket. Compression leaks into coolant and sensor sees air. Had both head gaskets replaced $ $ $ and was shown the faulty gasket. No recurring message even while towing fifth wheel trailer.
