In my sand drag truck I have a TH400 behind my ZZ502. It has lost reverse. Reverse works barely, but slips badly. You can feel it engage well, just little movement. All other gears seem to work fine. As before I realized it, I had made a few more passes on it that night.

I was hoping for an easy fix last night, but found metal (pepper sized) in with the clutch material in the pan. This is/was a Hughes transmission I bought from them a few years ago.

The whole transmission probably needs overhauling, but most importantly I do not want to do more damage to it.

Anyone know how hard it is to rebuild the TH400 and "fix" my slipping reverse problem? A TH400 can't be that hard. Taking it out is not an issue, I have a lift in my garage. I've just never opened up a transmission furthur than doing a shift-kit.

Any recommendations? I wish Mike L was closer..:D

Thanks in advance,
John

Stay out of it

If youve never rebuilt an A/T then I would suggest you dont do it to one thats gonna get that kind of abuse.

I would ship it to Mike No Questions asked.
There are tons of so called trans experts IMO they shouldnt have quit their day jobs.

and then when it takes a shit they blame you.

Get the trans done replace the converter, and ALL the COOLERS.
DO NOT reuse an OIL cooler or converter after you find metal.

The cooler is hot when all that metal went through it.
when you shut it of and get to ripping it out the cooler has cooled off and contracted HOLDING all that Debries.
when you put in your new trans it warms up expands and lets all that crap into your new trans. Then you can Kiss it Gbye
