Hey all, looking for some input here..saw some coolant on the ground the other day.Was able to get the truck on a lift tonight found coolant down around the oil filter.took the drivers side wheel & inner shield off w/truck running @ temp I could see coolant seeping around an injector..I don't claim to be a mechanic so I don't know the # of the injector(the one on the drivers side closest to the cab)I couldn't see where it could possibly be coming from above that injector...I had a similar issue about 100k miles ago where it looked like the eve cooler was leaking ended up being a pin hole in the head @ one of the injectors,in fact the shop that did the work pulled the injector & pressurized the system & coolant appeared out of a tiny hole barely visible...the mechanic said in 35+years he never saw this...has anyone ever seen this? Or am I missing something above this injector? I really didn't see anything above...I really appreciate any input thanks

I think the coolant line to the turbo is around that area above the injectors. I'd run it again & check for leaks from the top

Coolant lines for the turbo run through the valley, and the runs up top back to the water neck. Does this truck happen to be an 04-05? Theres been a few post up with llys and coolant leaks from around the injectors from thin castings giving out over time.

I really spent some time looking around on top & couldn't find anything leaking above that injector...where is the water neck?

Yes the truck is a 04 1/2...the mechanic that did the work last time said he believed it was a bad casting so it's ironic that you mention that...w/that being said I really need some sound advice as to where to get new heads & if there is some other things that I really should do while the truck is apart.i realize that most on here would be tackling this job themselves however that's not me & I'm a long way from understanding how to do this job,I do know the last time they had the cab lifted off & it looked pretty involved & it wasn't cheap either..there is really only one diesel shop in my area that services small diesels,so I'm kinda pigeon holed into using them, they will however install parts that I buy unlike a lot of dealerships....just looking to make better decisions this time around so any advice is needed,I work the truck everyday so I really need to have everything in order before it goes down, thanks again

So here's where am @..I can't see coolant anywhere above the injector so I'm gonna try to get it in to the shop & have a professional verify what I believe to be going on. If it is a bad head where do I buy new ones? What do you guys recommend? Am I saving anything by going w/a reman set? I saw some new complete heads on eBay for $1200 but I don't know if they are any good, could really use some help making these decisions because I want to be able to get the truck in the shop after Labor Day & I might be able to save a little $ by getting some of my own parts if I can. I'm also thinking I have a 150k on these injectors as well should I plan on having new ones installed while the heads are getting done? Thanks

Dexcool only.i may have mentioned earlier I made some poor decisions when it came to repairs on this truck,so I'm looking for some wisdom here so I don't throw away a bunch of $$....I've been here before & it doesn't look like it's gonna be cheap

My truck had a pretty bad coolant leak from the water pump and a coolant hose. had the dealer fix it and then after they tell me it's all good, they realize there was "internal engine damage". Turned out to be a blown head gasket pressurizing the system and pushing the coolant out. Check and see if your upper coolant hose is hard after cool down.

Checked the hose it's not hard...had the hg replaced once already...I'm still trying grasp that something that appears to be rare (bad casting) is happening again on a different set of heads

So I took the truck to the shop & they confirmed what I saw that coolant was leaking from around the #8 injector & basically said the same as last time that the head was either cracked or a result of a bad casting...so my inquiry this morning is what's a reasonable $$$ amount to swap out heads? I know there's folks here that either work in shops or have their own businesses so I'm looking for #'s here.i'm going to supply the parts they're going to do all the repairs...thanks for the help

man that sucks ! When I did my headgaskets I had them pressure checked at a big rig diesel place at 215$ each but Im thankfull I did now that I hear this.

Buffalo is a bit far from here, or else I'd offer :(

The heads that are on there now were pressure tested,so I just don't get it....I do appreciate the offer to help though! It's kind of puzzling to me that I posted pretty straight forward about needing some guidance here & came up w/crickets!! Oh well I've been plodding along here & got a new set of heads (complete)coming this week, & got the quote from the local diesel shop to do the swap....the real bright spot for me was reaching out to Brent @ LDS who's hooking me up w/ injectors, gasket kit,cp3,water pump & glow plugs...just a pleasure to talk to & do business with,in fact if I was closer or could have worked it out I would have loved to have his shop do the repairs!
