Long Cranking Time after EGR Replacement

New around here so please be kind...:)

I have an 04 LLY Silverado 2500HD, 199600 miles. Everything stock (except tires and wheels). Has run wonderfully for 11 years with minimal issues (replaced shocks, brakes, etc..normal stuff) up until this month.

Had to get the EGR valve replaced a few weeks ago after having it lose acceleration, pour black smoke, then resume to normal while driving. Prior to that, I had noticed that it seemed to be taking longer to crank and turn over than normal -- it normally barely cranked before turning over. It was noticeable to me, but everyone else thought I was imagining it.

Now, two weeks after replacing the EGR, it takes an extremely long cranking time to turn over. This also coincides with the weather getting colder. Usually it starts (but weakly) in the morning, then I let it run for a few minutes to warm up, and drive it 10 minutes to school. It runs great (hauled my horse trailer 120 miles round trip last weekend and it pulled as usual). It gets parked at school for 8+ hours, and really struggles to start after that -- today I gave up after 10-15 seconds of cranking, then it started after a few seconds on the second try. Usually I end up driving it around a bit in the evenings, and it starts much better when I've been driving a ways, or if it's been recently shut off.

Batteries are coming up on being due to be replaced; they were new in winter 2011. Fuel filter was replaced two weeks ago when the EGR was.

I'm a vet student and not really flush in cash so I'm hoping it's simple. Also 300+ miles away from my trusted diesel mechanic. Any ideas?

Sounds like weak battery. Just takes one of the batteries to be weak to cause the symptoms you are having. Have the batteries tested. Free at Auto Zone or most auto parts stores.

Where are you located?

Does it spin just as fast just longer?

See if your fuel filter head is leaking.

Egr replacement likely has nothing to do with it unless one of the soft fuel lines got nicked. Why replace the egr instead of deleting it?

Thanks 04Max, a weak battery seems like a best case scenario :)

Awenta -- I'm in Knoxville, TN. It seems to crank at the same rate, just for a longer period of time. Fuel filter was just replaced two weeks ago, so that seems unlikely, but worth checking..? I did have a leak in the O-ring in the fuel filter last year (two filters ago), and the truck started on a cold day then immediately died, then ran after priming. EGR was replaced because the truck has to pass emissions.

how cold is cold where you are ? I`m pass 250 000 miles on oem injector. Had issues with starting the first time of the day in cold weather. With scanner found I was still sitting over 0C (40f?) after 8 hours in the cold.

It had bad glowplugs and a glowplug controller that wouldnt throw codes, so no cel light.

Now Im still rocking the 250 000miles injectors, and it takes 2-3 sec of cranking to start(longer than normal but thats the injectors being worn and leaking fuel pressure.

On a cold morning, first pump the primmer before starting the truck and see if it's starting easier.

also try priming the system with the primer before you start it and make sure its not bleeding off some.

Thanks for the input everyone. It sat for 24+ hours over the holiday and barely sputtered to a start this morning, and when it did the clock was at 12am and the presets were changed. Got two new batteries and we're back in business. :D
