New around here so please be kind...
I have an 04 LLY Silverado 2500HD, 199600 miles. Everything stock (except tires and wheels). Has run wonderfully for 11 years with minimal issues (replaced shocks, brakes, etc..normal stuff) up until this month.
Had to get the EGR valve replaced a few weeks ago after having it lose acceleration, pour black smoke, then resume to normal while driving. Prior to that, I had noticed that it seemed to be taking longer to crank and turn over than normal -- it normally barely cranked before turning over. It was noticeable to me, but everyone else thought I was imagining it.
Now, two weeks after replacing the EGR, it takes an extremely long cranking time to turn over. This also coincides with the weather getting colder. Usually it starts (but weakly) in the morning, then I let it run for a few minutes to warm up, and drive it 10 minutes to school. It runs great (hauled my horse trailer 120 miles round trip last weekend and it pulled as usual). It gets parked at school for 8+ hours, and really struggles to start after that -- today I gave up after 10-15 seconds of cranking, then it started after a few seconds on the second try. Usually I end up driving it around a bit in the evenings, and it starts much better when I've been driving a ways, or if it's been recently shut off.
Batteries are coming up on being due to be replaced; they were new in winter 2011. Fuel filter was replaced two weeks ago when the EGR was.
I'm a vet student and not really flush in cash so I'm hoping it's simple. Also 300+ miles away from my trusted diesel mechanic. Any ideas?
