Hello,

As the temps rise outside I've been getting worried about my oil temp and pressure. I've noticed a drop in pressure during towing light loads. Just returned from a 6 hour trip.

The truck has all the necessary mods that LLY's are known to lack in stock wise just an FYI. Also new radiator recently

After searching forums and google fairly well, A few things I've learned. "KillerBee" has been inactive and may not do the -10AN Sandwich plate modification (To -12AN) anymore, CoolingTower.com (Too expensive), DMaxStore.com supplier Discontinued there oil cooler kit for the LLY (Per customer service), Cannot physically located -12AN (3/4") Sandwich Plate with 13/16 Threads anywhere online.

Website with sandwich plates I've came across but none look to be -12AN

Any input would be greatly appreaciated,

Alex.

EDIT: Does this work?

How about just changing the oil cooler to one from a 17-19 L5P ? They have I think it was about 40% more oil cooling capacity. There is a great thread here that contains a lot of good info.

I'm using a ported Earls sandwich plate that was ported by JoshH. I don't know how much he took out compared to how Earls ships them but this thing will flow more than enough oil now. I will take my steel -10 ORB to -12 JIC/AN fittings and drill them out to -12 internal. I am going to run the 2020 oil cooler as well as a large external oil cooler for overkill. The 01-16 cooler has 10 plates, 17-19 cooler has 14 plates, and 2020 cooler has 20 plates. Any cooler 17-20 is a major improvement even in terms of coolant flow. To run the 2020 you need the elbow, gasket, and cooler from GM. Also with the 2020 cooler you will need to trim a tab off of your factory manifold to clear.

i would run an external oil cooler before i ran an upgraded oil heat exchanger on a 01-05 truck.

you dont want more heat in the coolant, you want it out of there.

i would run the setrab unit without fear.

Try here for the mocal plate.

https://www.batinc.net/#PRODUCTS

Scroll down to oil cooler and sandwich plates, scroll to the SP2TC billet Thermostatic Sandwich Plate.

I have 1 of these on a 04 lb7 it has had no problems for 2+ years.

That plate has Inlet and outlet tapped for 7/8” ! Looks like I’ll be ordering that plate. Thanks much!

What air to oil cooler are you running up front?

Do you by chance have any info/pictures of your setup? Trying to figure out how many 90 degree firings/45s and such too order

Alex

Edit: looks
Like mocal sells coolers also. Will probably order from there. How many rows should I be looking to get?

This is the thread I went off of.

All this depends on what kind of environment you live in. My cooler might be to thick for your air temps and towing loads. If I had to do it again I might put it elsewhere but it works for now. P.S. you have to have shrouds all the way around.

James (Chevy1925) has a really good thread on cooling, just can't find it right now.

Set aside some time a read read read and then read a little more. :)

Thanks for the replies.

I'm slowly reading threw the thread. I'm on about page 8. Thank you.

As i'm reading, I noticed that guys are adding about 2.5 quarts to the system with their cooler. How can you gauge that extra capacity after initial installation?

Do you start the truck, let the cooler pull the extra 2.5 Quarts, shut it down and add oil? no harm done?

When I installed mine I did an oil change idled it 5 mins, shut off let sit 15 mins checked oil added as needed, then let it idle till warm shut off checked oil added as needed.

The thermostat does not block all oil so it will circulate into the cooler without being open.

2-2.5 quarts won’t hurt for a start up. Oil low light doesn’t even come on till your 3 quarts low

Like others have said, plumb the system and start it up. If the low level light comes on shut it down and fill it up. I think my system should add around 2.5-3qts total with lines and cooler.

Well guys just to give an update, I got the Mocal Sandwhich Plate, 12 AN Braided Lines, The Fluiddyne Oil Cooler, everything mounted and ready to go. I went to pull the oil filter off and put on the sandwhich plate and they must have sent me the wrong size. The adapter does not screw up to the oil housing and is too small for the oil filter... Really hope I'm not missing anything here.

This is a Screen shot of what the website looks like. I'm not sure if its a typo from what I ordered as the header is SP2TC and the Plate I ordered is SP2CT

They must have sent the wrong extension. There are different options for that sandwich plate and someone must have put the wrong size in the bag.
