So Ive had the dreaded hard upper radiator hose for a good two weeks now. This past saturday i decided to crack the overflow tank cap loose to relieve some pressure and check the coolant, the truck had cooled off for a good three hours or so and the coolant was room temp at the very hottest and the cap blew off on me. Ive been checkin on it early in the am before i start the truck up and the hose is hard then, as well as fully warm. The weird part for me was after i had the cap blow off on me saturday and the pressure was relieved the coolant level was right where it had been weeks before, right on the cold fill line. So from what i can understand im losing no coolant, just building pressure? I replaced the water pump about 5,000 miles ago over the summer and installed a welded pump from merchant auto. Zero white smoke or funny odor, truck seems to run just fine.. Could this be an issue other than head gaskets?? Maybe thermostats sticking? Bad overflow cap? I mean id like to install arp head studs someday but i domt quite have the time or money at the moment. Oh and I have also noticed that the truck never breaks 180 on the temp gauge lately, where in the summer it would occasiony run up to 210 or so, and hardly ever any lower than 185-190.

Maybe look for bubbles in your overflow tank at idle? Have you cleaned the cap?

If it's not heating up you've got too much air from cyl pressure or bad t stats.

I'd drive it for a while, get it hot and the pull the cap off and watch for bubbles, just be careful, because if you're gaskets are gone the pressure can strip the treads out on your cap and tank, so be sure you're putting out when you take the cap off.
